He was required to fly through extremely adverse weather conditions at night. He hovered his aircraft in direct fire of the enemy as the patrol climbed on board by a rope ladder. He saved six men from probable capture or death. For his heroism, Wilson received the Distinguished Flying Cross. After Vietnam he went on to become a utility/observation helicopter pilot and flight instructor at Ft. Belvoir, VA.
After leaving the Army he worked in IT at Voice of America.
