William Paul Geraghty ("Bill") was born on June 25, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland to Richard John Geraghty, Sr. and Carrie Margaret Geraghty (nee Willback). Bill was the middle son of five boys - Richard, Martin, Bill, Timothy and Jerome - raised by hard-working Irish Catholic parents in Waverly near the old Memorial Stadium. Fiercely loyal to his many family and friends, he was incredibly proud of his mother and father, his four brothers, his three sons, and his two grandsons, and he never missed an opportunity to tell an old friend, a new acquaintance or even a complete stranger just how proud he was. Bill loved Calvert Hall, his beloved Baltimore Orioles and all things Baltimore. Outgoing, social and sometimes opinionated, Bill always told you how he felt. He was quick to make friends, and if you were fortunate to have Bill as a friend, you had a friend for life - no questions asked. His stories were often the things of legend, whether it was his own baseball exploits, the exploits of one of his brothers or one of his sons on the soccer field, or just something that happened in the neighborhood in Waverly back in the day. And as is true with many good Irishmen, the stories only got better with the passage of time. He was certainly blessed with the gift of gab and he was happy to share that gift with anyone, anywhere. We have heard that some of Bill's best stories have been retold by other poets in dark pubs in Ireland and on swift German trains. Bill had a big heart and he filled it with many dear friends, good times and fond memories. Bill was a hard worker himself - he had a long and successful career working for Baltimore Gas & Electric. He also worked many years as a ticket salesman for the Orioles, a job which brought him great joy, a chance to spend time around the team he loved, and an opportunity to go to many ballgames with his young sons. He gave much of his free time to coach his sons in baseball and soccer, and St. Matthew's Under - 14 girls' soccer team, long before women's sports was what it has become today. Bill passed peacefully in Columbia, MD on September 8 at the age of 82.
Bill is survived by his two younger brothers and sisters- in-law, Tim and Lorraine and Jerry and Carolyn; by his many nieces and nephews; and by his three loving sons, Bill, Scott and Brian, and his two loving grandsons, Andrew and Patrick. He loved nothing more than to watch his children and grandchildren compete - whatever the sport - and then tell stories about them afterwards.
