Obituary

O'FLAHERTY, VIRGINIA S.

On October 22, 2024, our beloved Virginia "Jenny" Soper O'Flaherty, passed away peacefully at her home in Lutherville, MD, at the age of 73. She was preceded in death by her mother Virginia Louise Soper (née Potter) and father Horace Robert "Bob" Soper.  She was the beloved wife of Patrick John O'Flaherty; devoted mother of Brendan Nicholas O'Flaherty and Brigid Moira O'Flaherty and her husband Nicholas Matthew Fisher; loving grandmother of Evelyn Mae Fisher; the cherished sister of Margaret "Peggy" Ann Soper and Mary Katherine "Kitty" Dunseath (née Soper); dear sister-in-law of Mary Ellen O'Flaherty; and aunt of Eamon Espey and Ian Espey.

Early in her life, Jenny worked as an auto-mechanic and on a fruit orchard. Later, she focused her career on her love of arts and education, working as a museum curator of the Waipahu Cultural Garden Park, and Havre De Grace Decoy Museum, followed by an 18 year career as an art teacher. In retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family, and in creative pursuits including: knitting, painting, drawing, sewing, and tending a beautiful garden.  She loved to learn, having interests in Greek history, the American Civil War, and Native American and Eastern European cultures. She enjoyed learning about the different traditions, and music and dance of other cultures. She loved and found tranquility in nature; many vacations were centered around visits to national parks. She dreamed of a diesel bus tour of the south exploring blues and barbeque.  She had a wide range of musical favorites.

Jenny was warm, dependable, and loving, considerate of others and giving with her time and attention. She was the best mother and grandmother anyone could ask for. She was an amazing cook and loved to prepare meals for her family. She was creative and clever and could fix or create just about anything. Jenny will be deeply missed, the world darker in her absence;  but her loving nature will live on through her loved ones.
