Obituary

Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1934 to Gilbert and Verna (nee Rainey) Messick, Verna Carolyn Messick Bazzell lived a life devoted to family, community , and friendship. An exceptionally bright and determined student she graduated from Eastern High School at just 16 years old, a testament to her intelligence and determination.

In 1956 she married Eugene Irvin Bazzell and together they built a loving home and raised four children: Michael, Barbara, Deborah, and Laura. Family was always the center of Verna's life, and she took great pride in watching it grow to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her joy.

Verna spent many happy years in Baltimore's Homeland neighborhood, where she became a respected community leader. As president of the Homeland Association, she dedicated her time and energy to making the neighborhood a wonderful place to live. She was also always involved in the children's schools and was well known for writing thoughtful letters to the editor of The Baltimore Sun whenever she felt she could make a difference.

Once all of her children were in school, she began a successful career in real estate. Starting at Bryant Realty under the mentorship of Zoe Bryant, she quickly earned a reputation for her integrity, warmth, and dedication to her clients. She became one of the first women inducted into the prestigious Million Dollar Club, recognizing her outstanding success in the profession.

She continued working well into her later years, driven by her love of people and the relationships she built throughout her career.

She embraced life wholeheartedly. Verna enjoyed golfing with friends at Hillendale and Baltimore Country Clubs and was an enthusiastic bridge player who belonged to numerous bridge groups over the years.

Following the passing of her husband, Gene, Verna found companionship and happiness with her loving partner, Richard Colonell. Together they shared many wonderful years surrounded by family and friends. Later, Verna moved to a cottage on her daughter Barbara's farm in Monkton, where she spent her final years embraced by the love of her family.

Verna was a devoted mother, proud grandmother to seven grandchildren, adoring great-grandmother to four great- grandchildren, and dear sister of Marilyn E. Hess. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her family and watching each new generation grow.

She will be remembered for her kindness, intelligence, generous spirit, and deep commitment to those she loved. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the community she served, and the many lives she touched.

She will be honored by immediate family at a graveside burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gilchrist Center. www.Gilchristcares.org
