Obituary

On January 13, 2025, Thomas "Kip" Williams passed away in Towson, MD after an heroic two-and-a-half year battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Nancy Williams (nee Ferrara); devoted father of Lindsey June Williams and Owen Thomas Williams and his wife Amanda; adoring grandfather of June and Mary Williams; loving brother of Marjorie Vandenberg; cherished brother-in-law of Joan (Dave) McKay; caring godfather to Maggie McKay; and dear uncle to several nieces and nephews.

Kip was born in Newport, RI on January 5, 1956, the first child of Patricia (Murdock) and Thomas O. Williams. Kip grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, NY, and spent summers at the home of his paternal grandmother (Louise Callender Williams) in Prouts Neck, ME, and winter weekends at their country home in the Catskills where the family was a charter member of Hunter Mountain. He also adored his maternal grandparents, Marjorie (Cahne) and Abraham L. Bienstock, and relished experiences traveling together and at their home, "Evergreen," in Syosset, NY. Abe was Kip's bedrock and role model.

Kip attended the Buckley School (Manhattan) and the Middlesex School (Concord, MA), and received his BA in Political Science from University of Pennsylvania. He played various team sports and competed in skiing and sailing in his youth, and played for the club rugby team at Penn. Kip was never the biggest guy on the field, but he was always one of the fastest and toughest. A lifelong skier and sailor, he passed these interests to his children and was proud that they embraced his sense of adventure.

After college, Kip returned to Manhattan, settling near his childhood home where his mother still resided. From there, he began an accomplished, principled 45-year career in telecommunications sales and management, cherishing the relationships he maintained with friends, colleagues, and clients. When help was needed, Kip was there.

But, one relationship stood above the rest. Kip and Nancy met in 1979 working for Lanier Business Products in Manhattan. Their friendship blossomed and led to their marriage in 1982 and nearly 43 wonderful years together. Across those decades, Kip and Nancy built a loving family, which included three adoring big dogs, and shared countless memories at their homes in Madison, NJ, Cold Spring, NY, Fishkill, NY, and Phoenix, MD, and their house on Seneca Lake in Ovid, NY.

Kip had diverse interests - traveling, good food, rock and roll, fine art, antiques, spy and conspiracy novels, woodworking, photography, skiing, sailing, and gardening. He was also an excellent dancing partner who knew how to lead. But, above all else, Kip was a selfless and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who shared a wry wit and quick sense of humor with his family. Some of his favorite times were spent around the dinner table enjoying one of Nancy's delicious meals and laughing with his loved ones. Kip touched, inspired, and humored family and friends until his final days, and he will be greatly missed.
