Obituary

On July 16, 2024, Sue Carolyn Milovicz (nee von Tongeln) passed away peacefully, at the age of 75.

Sue spent her early years as an Army brat, her later youth in Syracuse, NY, and her senior year of highschool in Nebraska. Sue began her freshman year at Hartwick College in 1967. Located in Oneonta, NY, Hartwick was a lifelong touchstone for fun, friendships, and academic adventures. Sue could regale you with stories about Oneonta bars, Hartwick's incredible soccer team, and parties in the duplex on Spruce Street. Her studies in Sociology prepared her for her long career in state and federal government as a specialist and advocate for Social Security disability benefits.

Sue had a real passion for the work that was done at Maryland Disability Determination Services. She treated every claimant fairly and thought through every single decision. She was a role model and mentor to many people there, sharing her knowledge freely and, often, with great humor.

Sue married that handsome Navy man, Rich Milovicz, in 1971. Through the Navy, they were able to travel the Mediterranean together and they built deep friendships with shipmates and their significant others. After the Navy, they moved to Raleigh so that Rich could get his degree at NC State. They eventually settled in the Towson, MD area where they had a daughter who they loved with all their hearts.

Sue adored books, and her grandbabies, and a good  political discussion. She was a multi-decade subscriber to the New Yorker and the Baltimore Sun, and a strong follower of NC State sports and the US National Soccer team. She threw memorable parties full of good people and great conversation that tended to last well into the night. She was often stubborn, and often wise. Sue accumulated a remarkable number of lifelong friendships, and she will be greatly missed.

Sue is predeceased by her mother and father, Marjorie and Walter (VT) von Tongeln, her brother James von Tongeln, and her husband Rich Milovicz. Sue is survived by her daughter Leigh Barton (nee Milovicz), son-in-law Jonathan Barton, and her grandchildren Graham and Ellory.

The family will receive friends at the Ruck Towson Funeral Home, 1050 York Road (Beltway Exit 26) on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 12:00-1:00pm, at which time the Memorial Service will begin. A private inurnment will be held in New York at a later date.
