Obituary

Sophia Maggelakis Vendelis passed away peacefully on Sunday April 26th surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Andrew Vendelis; her sister Vasilia Maggelakis; her three children Manuel Vendelis (spouse Dina), Anastasia Vendelis-Klima (spouse Jamie) and Christina Makris; and her nine cherished grandchildren: Andrew, Jonathon and Christina Vendelis; Sophia, Andrew and Alexander Klima; and Megan, Elizabeth and Peter Makris.

Sophia was born and raised in Baltimore Maryland where she attended Eastern High school and studied at the Peabody Institute. She graduated from Towson State Teacher's College in 1962 and began her career as a third-grade teacher, a role she held for five years. During this time she supported her husband Andrew through dental school after their marriage on August 18, 1963. While raising her three children, she remained deeply involved in their education and worked at the Orton Dyslexia Society in its infancy.

Her greatest devotion was to Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, where she was part of the founding families and a pillar of the community. Sophia established the church's Stewardship Program, which continues to serve as a model for other parishes. She played an integral role in the church's development, chairing the Ecclesiastical Arts Committee responsible for its iconography, teaching Sunday School, and actively participating in the Philoptochos Society. She also chaired the Greek Festival for seven years. She was involved in every aspect of Saint Demetrios that you see today.

Once her children were grown, she dedicated herself to fundraising efforts that supported the renovation of the educational center and the construction of the new gym facility. As chairman of the expansion building committee, she helped raise millions of dollars, leaving a lasting legacy that shaped the church and its community for generations.

Sophia was a true pillar of the community, remembered for her faith, generosity, and unwavering commitment to others.
