Edgar
d. May 14, 2026
Richard Byers Edgar, known throughout his life as "Dick," passed away on May 14, 2026, at the age of 88.
Born on August 21, 1937, in Baltimore City, one of two children of Walter A. "Jack" Edgar and Margaret Byers Edgar, Dick grew up in Anne Arundel County and in Howard County, Maryland on his father's thoroughbred horse farm. His father was President of the Maryland Horse Breeders' Association from 1951 to 1954.
Dick graduated from McDonogh School in 1955. He earned a B.A. in Accounting from Duke University in 1959, then served in the U.S Navy, where he was on active duty as a commissioned naval officer with the rank of lieutenant until 1964. In 1964 he joined United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company (U.S.F.&G.), where he became a Chartered Financial Analyst and worked until 1969. He received an M.B.A. from George Washington University in 1969.
Following his time at U.S.F.&G., Dick embarked on a career as a real estate developer in Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia. He developed and built Hunt Valley Golf Club from 1969 to 1970. In subsequent years he developed numerous properties in Baltimore County and Talbot County, where he had a second home. In Talbot County he redeveloped many historic buildings, including the Avalon Theatre in Easton.
In addition to his business activities, Dick was a member of the vestry of St. James Church, in Monkton, Maryland. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of McDonogh School from 1976 to 1984, where he was instrumental in the development of the school's corporate campus. An avid golfer, with a handicap as low as 1, Dick reviewed golf courses for Golf Week magazine.
Dick is survived by his former wife, Mary Persons Edgar; by their three children, Stephanie Rogers Edgar of Akron, Ohio; John Persons Edgar (Mary) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Christopher Coles Edgar (Alice) of Paris, France; and by five grandchildren: Shane Michael Edgar, Caroline Elizabeth Edgar, Jillian Grace Edgar, Josephine Mary Carolyn Edgar, and Henry Richard Martin Edgar.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to Pickersgill Retirement Community, 615 Chestnut Avenue, Towson, Maryland, 21204.
