Obituary

Randa S. Blackwell (Richardson), age 80, of Baltimore, MD, passed away peacefully September 29, 2026 with her family at her bedside.

She was born in Baltimore on February 19, 1946 to the late Isabelle and Cecil Richardson and in her youth she enjoyed her summers in Vienna with her late grandparents Cecil and Nellie Richardson.

As a self-taught expert, she used her grit and brilliance to work her way up in her career. Randa spent over 45 years working in administrative medical billing and coding for Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, and Union Memorial Hospitals. She was considered a leader in her field and built many strong and lasting relationships at work that carried her all over the country to teach, consult and give lectures at conferences.

She had a love for reading that would rival any librarian and was hardly ever seen without a book or kindle in her hand. She was a die-hard Ravens fan and took to dying her hair purple in support of her favorite team. This led to her great-grandchildren lovingly naming her "Mom Mom Purple Hair". She found the ultimate comfort in a good cup of hot tea and after taking her first sip would say, "Now all is right with the world".

Her capacity to love was unmatched and her greatest joy in life was spending time making memories with her family. She could be heard often saying that her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her "heart with two legs out walking around in the world."

Together with her beloved late husband of 41 years Roger "Ron" Blackwell, she enjoyed taking trips and collecting treasures they found while antiquing.

She is preceded in death by her sister Delores Silverman and her life long best friend Paulette Valiquet.

Randa is survived by her sister Darlene Malat and her husband Ken, and her brother Wayne Richardson and his wife Maureen. Her three daughters Randie Shawler, Ronni Arthur and her husband David, and Laurie Blackwell. Her four grandchildren Jessica Morgan and her husband Dayne, Katherine Canary, Erin Collins, and Joseph Scaruzzi. Her four great-grandchildren Scarlett, Luna, Tychus, and Arya.
