Obituary

WHELAN, PHYLLIS R.

On January 17, 2026, Phyllis Rita Whelan (nee Reymann) passed away peacefully in Timonium, MD after a 10 plus year journey with Alzheimer's disease. Up until the very end, Phyllis maintained her kindness, grace, and compassion, and expressed her love for her family and caregivers through her beautiful smile and gentle touches.

She was the beloved wife of the late James Joseph Whelan, III.; devoted mother of Kathleen Stanley (Edward), Honora Myers (Bob), Mary Ann Bauer (Jon), Erin Boland (Bart), Regina Todd (David), Laura Camp (Steve), and the late James Joseph Whelan, IV; loving grandmother ("Grammy") of Colleen Stanley, Jimmy Stanley, Michelle Stanley, Chris Myers (Sam), Patrick Myers (Julie), Sara McKnight (Dylan), Jonathan Bauer (fiancé Morgan), Lauren Bauer, Ian Boland (Sabrina), Clare Boland, Bridget Boland, Trevor Todd, Hailey Camp, Adam Camp, and Caroline Camp; cherished great grandmother of Hadley Myers, John Robert ("JR") Myers, and Juno Boland; dear sister of the late Elizabeth Ziehl, Arthur Reymann, Anna Hergenroeder, Edward Reymann, Gertrude Reymann, Charles Reymann, Albert Reymann, John Reymann, and Helen Schroeter; and adored Aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis graduated from IND in 1953 where she played basketball. Following in the footsteps of her sister, Anna, she became a nurse graduating from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1956. She married her beloved Jim in 1957 with whom she shared 62 years of marriage, prior to his death in 2019, and had 7 children. Phyllis worked as a nurse in the operating room at Mercy Hospital for several years prior to taking time off to raise her girls. She returned to nursing at St. Joseph Hospital on the post-surgical floor after all her children were in school.

Phyllis devoted her life to caring for others. From raising her family, to caring for her husband, neighbor, brothers, sisters, cousins, and many others throughout her nursing career. She also devoted many hours volunteering at Mercy Hospital gift shop. She was a devout Catholic, attending daily Mass with Jim and her sisters, Anna and Helen, and serving as eucharistic minister. Phyllis quietly did the work of the Lord, never drawing attention to herself.

Phyllis loved the beach and was an avid tennis player and golfer. She also enjoyed playing bridge. She was a skilled seamstress making clothes for her girls and their barbie dolls and later for her granddaughter's dolls. She also loved to needlepoint and crochet. She crocheted many blankets for her children, grandchildren, family, and friends. She made baptismal garments for the church and beautiful "angel" gowns for stillborn babies.

Above all, Phyllis loved her family and worked tirelessly her entire life to make every moment memorable.
