Obituary for Peggy Gladys Burk (3/8/1925-08272024)
Peggy Gladys Burk peacefully passed away on August 27, 20204 at the age of 98; in Towson, MD, where she lived a long and happy life; the last years of which were spent under the loving care of the staff at The Levindale Geriatric Center and Bridging Life Inpatient Hospice Care.
Born to Theodore Michael Bartholomee and Gladys Virginia Coleman, Peggy graduated from Towson High School, attended YMCA Business College, and worked as an assistant secretary for Black and Decker. At the age of 15, she met the love of her life, John Franklin Burk of Longreen, MD. The following year Jack was inducted into the US Army and in 1944, before shipping out to Europe, they married. She was a devoted daughter, wife and mother of three sons: John Franklin III, James Steven and Todd Andrew, giving to each whatever support they needed to meet life's challenges; be it as the wife of a Brigadier General, the mother of an Eagle Scout, or loving teacher and caretaker to her youngest, autistic son Todd.
Peggy delighted in being a homemaker and spending time outdoors caring for her flower gardens. She sewed, quilted, and was a prolific writer of notes to encourage family and friends. In her early years she hosted dance parties and loved attending gala military balls. She was a tireless student of Bible studies, whether as a teacher or a student, alone or in small groups. Notably, she was an early and effective advocate for developing home schooling programs especially for the hearing handicapped.
Preceded in death by her husband, her older brother (Eugene Bartholomee), her younger sister (Ardith Mae Bartholomee Bridges), and her first-born son (John Franklin Burk III).
