Obituary

Pearl Louise Gintling (nee Elways), 102 years of age, from Lodge Forest, MD passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on November 26, 2025. She was born in Elkton, MD, on August 12, 1923, to Herbert and Lottie Elways. Married 75 years, she was the beloved wife of the late Nevin J. Gintling, and devoted mother of Carolyn "Bonnie" Aronson (John "Buz" Carragher), Louise M. Semancik (Andrew), Karen  J. Gintling (Gary Howard), and the late Linda D. Zampini (Robert), as well as a dearest friend of Rose and Pat McGrath.

Pearl was the loving grandmother of Denise Parsons (Jay), and Michelle Guinn (the late Patrick), and cherished great grandmother of Aaron Stover (Akilah), Ryan Stover, Kyle Guinn, and Morgan Guinn. She was the proud great great grandmother of Aulani Pearl Stover, and Christian Stover. She is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers, William, Charles, George, and James Elways, and sisters Laura Hunt, Evelyn Beck, and Mary Briggs.

Pearl graduated from Sparrows Point High School, then met the love of her life, Nevin Gintling. Nevin first saw Pearl while riding the streetcar and told his best friend, Dale Warner, "That's the girl I'm going to marry". They were married in 1942. As their family grew, Pearl was involved in various activities. She was a Girl Scout leader, participated in the CYO, and the Knights of Columbus. She loved to dance, was an avid gardener, and enjoyed books and working on puzzles. Her hobbies included sculpting, oil painting, sewing, and making jewelry. Pearl's talent as a sculptor was appreciated by many who bid on the beautiful pieces she donated to several organizations for fund raising.  She found great joy in preparing meals and celebrating birthdays and holidays with her family, who she viewed as the center of her universe. Pearl and Nevin loved to travel, visiting all of the 48 states, plus Mexico and Canada, mostly towing a pop-up camper, and always with a green station wagon. Some of Pearl's happiest times were her annual girls' trips. They started with her mother and her sisters, Mary and Laura, and then eventually evolved into trips with her daughters and granddaughters. So much laughter and wonderful memories are wrapped up in those trips. Pearl was very proud of her independence and, after Nevin passed, she lived on her own at home up until August of this year.

Pearl taught kindergarten at St Luke's Catholic School, as well as several Baltimore County schools. Later, she became a community advocate, was one of the founders of the North Point Peninsula Community Coordinating Council, and consulted with the Army Corps of Engineers on their Hart-Miller Island project. She was instrumental in the restoration of the historic Todd House in Ft Howard, and an organizer of the Defenders' Day Celebration and Reenactment. Pearl was devoted to her community and received numerous awards for her service. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and neighbors.

The family will receive friends at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home of Dundalk, Inc., 7922 Wise Ave, Dundalk, MD 21222, on Tuesday, December 2 from 2-4 and 6-8 with a service celebrating Pearl's life at 7p.m.

Graveside services will be on Wednesday, December 3 at 11 AM, at Leed's Cemetery in Elkton, MD. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Pearl's name:  https://www.stjude.org/
