Nelson Edwin Reichart, 78, of Towson, Maryland, passed away on October 31, 2026, following a two-year battle with leukemia. A devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, proud veteran, and dedicated public servant, Nelson will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, generous spirit, and unwavering love for his family.
Nelson is survived by his beloved wife, Mary E. Reichart; his children, Sean M. Reichart, Margaret E. Reichart, and Mary Beth Lysse and her husband, Steve Gibson; and his cherished grandchildren, Ellis R. Lysse, Sarah A. Gibson, and Alexis L. Gibson. He is also survived by his brother, Ronald Reichart, and his wife, Patricia Reichart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Evelyn Reichart.
Nelson lived a life defined by service, dedication, and a genuine concern for others. He proudly served six years in the Army National Guard with the 136th Combat Support unit based in Parkville, Maryland. Nelson devoted the majority of his professional career to serving the citizens of Maryland through various positions in state government. His years of public service culminated in his role as Deputy Secretary of the Maryland Department of General Services, from which he retired in 2024.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Nelson was committed to giving back to his community. He served on various boards, including GILD and Valley Bridge Recovery Center, dedicating his time and experience to organizations focused on helping others.
At the heart of Nelson's life was his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary, affectionately known as "Meme." Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, family, and cherished memories. In their younger years, Nelson and Mary enjoyed ballroom dancing, where Nelson, perhaps to the surprise of those who knew him, was remarkably light on his feet. Throughout their marriage, they shared a love of traveling, enjoying trips to local beaches, North Carolina, and Mexico. They especially treasured gathering around the table, sharing good food, conversation, and laughter with family and friends. Whether traveling somewhere special, cheering on the home teams, or simply enjoying a meal together, Nelson and Mary found happiness in life's shared experiences and the company of those they loved.
While Nelson took pride in his career and community service, his greatest joy came from his family. He treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren, creating memories filled with laughter, love, and the occasional bit of grandfatherly wisdom. An outdoorsman at heart, Nelson enjoyed fishing and hunting and had a special affection for animals.
Those fortunate enough to know Nelson will remember a kindhearted man with a wonderful sense of humor. Affectionately known to some as "Big Bird," Nelson had a gift for making people smile, often finding humor in even the most difficult circumstances. True to his character, he continued joking and bringing laughter to those around him, even in his final days.
Nelson was also known for sharing a simple but meaningful piece of advice: "Did you make your bed this morning?" He believed that making your bed meant that, no matter what challenges the day brought or what else went unfinished, you could end the day knowing you had accomplished at least one thing. It was a small lesson that reflected his practical wisdom, positive outlook, and belief in the importance of life's everyday accomplishments.
And, of course, Nelson had a legendary sweet tooth. As his family and friends can attest, he never met a cookie he didn't like. It was one of the many little things that made him uniquely Nelson and will continue to bring a smile to those who remember him.
Nelson touched many lives throughout his 78 years. Whether through his years of public service, his friendships, or the love he shared with his family, he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, dedication, and compassion.
Although his presence will be deeply missed, his family takes comfort in knowing that his humor, wisdom, and love will live on through the countless memories and stories shared by those who knew him.
And perhaps the best way to honor Nelson is to remember his simple advice: Make your bed each morning, find something to laugh about, cherish the people you love, and never pass up a good cookie.
The family will receive friends at the Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 York Rd, Towson, MD on Saturday, November 21, 2026, from 2-4 & 6-8pm, with the Memorial Celebration to begin at 6:30pm. Military Honors will be held during 2:00-4:00pm hours. The interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in Nelson's memory to Valley Bridge Recovery House, Helping Up Recovery House, Catholic Charities or to GILD. Contributions to these organizations will honor Nelson's generous spirit, his commitment to helping others, and his belief in the importance of compassion and community.
