Nancy Carol
Ball
d. Mar 31, 2025
Towson high school, Virginia Intermont, Mary Washington and Johns Hopkins
Nancy taught at Kenwood high school for 30 years, below are a few programs Nancy was very proud of.
Nancy started a program for students who fall between special education and regular classes which she emphasized all of her service.
She created reading sources for her students as well as many other teaching materials. She was also asked to initiate the English 9 program for Essex Community College which prepared two students to take the English entrance exam.
She was the first female teacher to be nominated teacher of the year and the only teacher to be nominated many times. She was the first female teacher to be president of the faculty club to which she was elected for many years.
Nancy was also given the unheard honor of having a yearbook dedicated to her.
When she saw there were no art appreciation classes, she used her planning period to offer the class to interested students who had study hall period. The class was so successful there was a standing room only.
She spent her entire career supporting students and loving her work as a sponsor. When needed she stepped in coaching the girl's lacrosse team, organizing the foreign student exchange program and supporting student teams in mock legislation and debates.
Although each summer she taught summer school classes at various schools and was usually offered a job within the school she'd already returned to her love, Kenwood.
Nancy was equally proud of the social activities she was asked to sponsor or created herself.
She was asked by her students to sponsor their senior class, which she did her entire career.
Her early 10th grade girls asked her to sponsor a Trinty club which met each week and focused on community activities for 3 years. She was the only teacher asked to sponsor 2 consecutive clubs by 2 groups of girls.
In her last years she alone sponsored the senior class having monthly meetings encouraging students to sell candy etcetera giving each student the opportunity to acquire points for a free senior prom, which the students enjoyed so much they stayed extra hours dancing to the band!
The senior class had many receptions and enjoyed a dance to which a piper in full regalia piped the class into church. She wanted her students to enjoy social events such as receptions for the faculty, Awards Assembly and graduation ceremonies. For which one event she organized a Dixieland band to serenade the graduates as they and their families enjoyed a great feast!
After she retired nine people were assigned to carry out only the basic activities.
When another teacher took the title because Nancy had many other duties a committee asked her to resume her title which entailed many fundraisers and opportunities for faculty members to enjoy each other's interesting lives. She often invited everyone and their spouses to our house for parties which one of her department chairs called it "Breakfast at Tiffany's". After she taught a class in the early 60s her students appeared at her home on weekends for a meal or play a game etcetera. When they graduated, most classes went to her house after their farewell assembly and surprised her when she returned home with hundreds of students. When the USA reached the moon many of the same students who by this time or in college came to her house for a surprise to watch the moon landing.
She also participated in faculty plays as an actor director etc
After retirement she she managed the Kirk Stieff store, made monthly sales and advertisement Plan with creating new products.
Always interested in antiques she and her friend Jean Richardson promoted the Kenilworth antique show expanding it to two days many months throughout the year.
All in all, she was not only in the room when it happened but also was the leader of the action.
