Obituary

Miriam (Mitzi) Knibb Tyrie passed away in her Stoneleigh home surrounded by loving family and caregivers on June 17, 2026. She was 96 years old.

Mitzi was born on January 28, 1930, to Esther Reynolds Bowles and William Webster Knibb in Richmond, Virginia. She had an older sister, Shirley Ann. In her early years, the family frequently visited their family farms, Skinflint (Knibb) and Cardwell (Bowles), in Goochland County, Virginia. There, the sisters and their cousins ran barefooted through the fields and streams and slept on the porch roofs on hot summer nights. Skinflint and Cardwell would remain important locations in the lives of Mitzi, Shirley, and their families.

The family moved to the Lake Montebello area of Baltimore in 1935 where Mitzi and Shirley played among the trees and fields surrounding the lake. On many weekends and holidays the family traveled "down the country", back to Goochland County to visit relatives at Cardwell and Skinflint, her family's homesteads . Mitzi attended Montebello Elementary, Hamilton Junior High, and Eastern High School. She graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1951. There she was an editor and writer for the student-run Diamondback newspaper as well as a member of two honor societies, the Honorary Collegiate Journalism Fraternity, Pi Delta Epsilon as well as Omicron Nu, an American honor society for home economics. She was also a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi International Women's Fraternity, Pi Delta Chapter, and the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter.

After graduation, Mitzi worked as a graphic artist and author for the Hecht Company and Moran Printing Company. She specialized in advertising and publication design, creating layouts and graphics for a variety of projects, and also contributed written articles to company publications.

In 1952, Mitzi married John (Jack) Richard Tyrie. Paige was the first born in 1953, then Drew (1956), Stuart (1964) and Ross (1965). After Ross' birth, the family moved to the Stoneleigh area in Baltimore County where Mitzi lived the remainder of her life. Mitzi was a very talented painter and sculptor and a number of her pieces were the art of the family home. She was an active member of Towson Presbyterian Church. One of the ways she shared her artistic gifts was by designing and constructing complex bulletin boards highlighting important bible events and lessons.

Sewing was another creative outlet and it gave her great pleasure to make things for her children and grandchildren, whom she loved beyond measure. Some of the things she made were special outfits, Halloween costumes, prom dresses, and water ballet costumes. She nurtured close relationships within her family through holidays and vacations with extended family reaching all the way to fourth cousins. Many of these relationships her family maintains to this day, leaving a strong family legacy.

Mitzi and Jack had an exceptional marriage! Even with 4 wonderful kids, the thing they loved most was just being together side-by-side. They would sit on the couch and hold hands while discussing the events of the day or family matters. Or, when in Ocean City, they would gaze at the ocean from the porch of their house, watch their children and grandchildren playing in the surf, admire the views, watch the moon or simply talk about everything and nothing. Each lit up when the other entered the room. Through the trials and tribulations of life, they always excitedly had one another. Sadly, Jack passed away early in June 1999. The children were quite worried about Mitzi's broken heart and loneliness but she persevered for 27 years after Jack's passing.

Mitzi was a caring mother and skilled multitasker, managing the needs of her four energetic children, often with the addition of her ailing father, while also acting as the administrative manager of Jack's business while he traveled, answering the business line, processing sales orders and other customer needs.

Mitzi was also a proud direct descendant of a surviving member of the Jamestowne colony and was a Life Member of The Jamestowne Society. As a daughter of Goochland County, Virgina, she was also a proud member of the Goochland County Historical Society.

She is survived by her children, Paige, Drew (Lori), Stuart (Terrie), and Ross; her grandchildren, Virginia Callegary and Andrew Callegary (Kalene Dolan), children of Paige; Megan (Robert Ussery) and Peyton (Katie), children of Drew and Lori; and Everitt (Lauren) and Gwen (Liam Emery), children of Stuart and Terrie. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Quintin, son of Megan and Robert, and Kaia, daughter of Peyton and Katie; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, friends, and caregivers.

She led a long and happy life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A viewing will be held at Ruck Funeral Home, 1050 York Road, Towson, Maryland on Sunday, June 28 from 5 to 7 pm. The funeral will be at Towson Presbyterian Church, 400 W Chesapeake Ave, Towson, Maryland 21204, on Monday, June 29 at 2 pm. Interment at BeeTree Cemetery in Parkton, Maryland will follow.
