Our beloved father, Michael Vatenos, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, at the age of 89, with his family by his side. He was born in Weirton, WV, on July 21, 1935, to Kaliope "Betty" Fangikis, from the island of Chios, and John "Jerry" Vatenos, from the island of Halki. After the closing of the Weirton Steel Mill, Michael and his family migrated to Baltimore, as many in the Greek community did.
Growing up, Michael spent much of his childhood playing with friends and watching 10-cent movies at the Broadway Theater, where he developed a lifelong passion for classic films and heroes like John Wayne. He also cherished summers returning to Weirton to visit his grandparents, whom he loved dearly.
After graduating from Patterson High School, Mike joined the Navy and proudly served aboard the battleship USS Iowa during the Korean War. His time in the Navy was a significant chapter in his life, where he served as a gunman and developed a strong sense of duty and camaraderie with his fellow sailors. His service to his country was a source of immense pride, and he often shared fond memories of his experiences. After being honorably discharged in 1957, Mike carried the values and discipline he learned in the Navy throughout his life, contributing to his community and family with the same dedication and integrity.
Upon returning to Baltimore, Michael worked alongside his father at the "Little Restaurant" on Howard Street, helping the family business grow into a beloved local institution. Later, he went on to own and operate the SE Truck Stop, Swiss Coffee Shop, and Stephano's Pizzeria. He ended his career at The Wyman Restaurant, where he formed a lifelong friendship with its owner, Spiro. In addition to his professional commitments, Michael was an active member of his community, known for his generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
While attending a friend's wedding in Weirton, Michael met the love of his life, Norma Pappas. They fell in love and were married at the Annunciation Cathedral on June 14, 1959. Together, they raised three children: John, Renee, and Peter, instilling in them the values of faith, hard work, kindness, and family unity.
Michael's greatest joy came from being a father, grandfather (Papou), and great-grandfather. His family was his pride and joy, and he found immense fulfillment in the relationships he nurtured. Michael's legacy extends beyond his family. His life serves as a testament to the enduring power of love, faith, and community.
Michael is survived by his children, John (Laura), Renee, and Peter (Monika); his grandchildren, Hannah, Alexandra, and Madison, Michael, Eva, and Corinne; and his great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Joe, Andrew, and Alvin. Along with his many beloved family members, they will forever cherish the memories of his warmth, wisdom, and love.
