Obituary

Michael John Van Stone died unexpectedly at his home on June 23, 2025, in Sparrows Point, MD. He was 79 years old.

Michael is survived by his children, Michael Anthony Van Stone (Tana) of Mt. Wolfe, PA and Maureen Lynne Van Stone of Towson, MD; two step-granddaughters, Haley Updegraff and Kalyn Markel; two granddaughters, Catherine (Cate) and Margaret (Meg) Ruopp; a step-grandson, Jordan Ruopp; a nephew, John (Jack) Van Stone III (Ashley); a niece and goddaughter, Katherine Bennett (Andrew); a great nephew, Charles (Charlie) Van Stone; and his second wife, Diane Van Stone. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Rosemary and John Van Stone, his sister-in-law and brother, Kathleen (Kathy) and John (Jack) Van Stone, his first wife, Nancy Kunkle, and his beloved dog, Max.

Michael was born in Baltimore, MD on July 4, 1945. Michael grew up on Walther Avenue and attended St. Dominic's School. Each summer, he spent time visiting his cousins on the New Jersey shore. He graduated from Calvert Hall College High School in 1963. During adulthood, he lived in Fells Point and Charles Village.

For nearly four decades, Michael worked as an Account Executive for Dawn's Office Supply Company in Baltimore, MD. At Dawn's, he made lifelong friends. In his retirement, he worked part-time as a bus driver for the Institute of Notre Dame (IND) in Baltimore, MD. He loved IND and he was devastated when it closed its doors in 2020.

Michael was a devoted father (DaddyO), grandfather (Pop), and a proud uncle. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters, going on walks with his dog, and talking to his neighbors. Most mornings, he and Max could be found getting their regular breakfast order of a McDonalds sausage McMuffin. He credited this as the secret to Max's longevity. As a lifelong, Baltimorean, he was a fan of both Baltimore sports teams and could find a friend (or make one) anywhere he went. In addition to the Orioles and Ravens, he loved watching his granddaughters play the sports they loved. He especially enjoyed celebrating his birthday each Fourth of July. He gracefully battled lung cancer since 2021.

Family will receive relatives and friends at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 York Road (Beltway exit 26) on Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. A prayer service led by Fr. Larry Johnson will be held in the chapel at Ruck Funeral Home from 5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
