d. Mar 1, 2026
Michael Riskin, a gifted psychotherapist, educator, and musician whose life's work was devoted to helping others heal and grow, passed away at home in Baltimore, Maryland on March 1st, 2026. He was born on July 20, 1946.
Michael grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, where he developed an early love of music, literature, and learning. He attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, where he received a Master of Social Work. A lifelong learner, Michael pursued additional studies and professional development at several institutions throughout his career, including Rutgers University.
Following graduate school, Michael began his career as a teacher and psychotherapist at the Glaydin School. His time there formed many of the lifelong friendships that remained deeply meaningful to him. Colleagues and former students remembered him not only as a teacher and counselor, but also as a compassionate mentor who believed deeply in the potential of every individual.
In the early 1980s, Michael joined Loudoun County Mental Health as a Substance Abuse Coordinator. Through dedication and leadership, he eventually became Director. His work in substance abuse treatment and mental health advocacy helped shape services for countless individuals and families in the community.
Michael later established his own private practice in Virginia, where he combined his professional expertise with his deep love of music. Through a unique blend of therapy and musical expression, he helped hundreds of people navigate recovery, healing, and personal transformation. Those who worked with him often spoke of his warmth, insight, and the genuine care he brought to every interaction. The relationships he built with clients enriched his life just as deeply as he enriched theirs.
Music was central to Michael's identity. A consummate musician, his passion for music radiated through every part of his life—it showed whenever he played, it showed in amazing longtime relationships, it showed in the work that he did in the saving of young lives through remarkable counseling. Whether playing guitar or sharing music with others, he brought heart, soul, joy, and creativity into every aspect of his life. His musical contributions were recognized with his induction into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Hancock and his wife, Nancy DeGraft Riskin; her daughters, Kimberley Beltran and Kelly Campen (Marc Campen). He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Alexandra Hancock, Emilie Hancock, Lindsey Hancock, Suzanne Hancock, Christian Beltran (Sierra Beltran), Caitlin Beltran, Grace Campen, Isabelle Campen, and Jack Campen. He is predeceased by his beloved sister, Karen Riskin.
Michael will be remembered for the music he shared, the lives he touched, and the love and wisdom he offered so generously through his deep commitment. His legacy lives on in the countless people whose lives were changed by his kindness, his counseling, and the music that flowed from his heart. His work saved lives, inspired hope, and created lasting connections with all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date
