Maureen Sweeney
Turnbaugh
d. Jul 4, 2026
Maureen Turnbaugh, beloved daughter of Marie and John Sweeney and sister to the late Ron Sweeney, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Saturday, July 4, 2026. She was 89. Maureen and her husband David were long-time residents of Loch Raven Village in Towson, MD.
In her youth, she was a 1954 graduate of Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School. After high school, Maureen attended Baltimore Junior College and took some classes at MICA. Maureen and her friend, Patricia Frank, enjoyed art classes focused on fashion.
It was during these years of the later 1950's that Maureen would meet the "love" of her life, artist David T. Turnbaugh, at Cahill Dance Hall. Maureen and David's love grew during a 2-year courtship and engagement on Christmas Eve, 1959. They were then married at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Towson, MD on July 29, 1960.
Maureen's goal in life was to have a strong marriage and raise a close family. All of which she accomplished in her 62-year marriage to David. These years were marked by raising her three children, Kimberly, Ted, and Steven, and helping David with his art business, Maryland Realist Ltd. Maureen was an extremely strong supporter and anchor for her husband's career. Even through the lean years that an artist's career can have, Maureen was always there for David. She also helped David go on to become a 6-time Maryland Duck Stamp winner, and other notable artistic accomplishments and accolades.
Maureen was a true "Marylander." She loved Baltimore, the surrounding rural landscapes (Maryland horse country), and of course the Eastern Shore along with its beautiful beaches. She spent many happy days in Ocean City, Maryland.
Her many signature family recipes were enjoyed and coveted by many… some of which include her Crabcakes, Imperial Crab, and her most famous Butter Nut Poundcake. As Marylanders understand, a great night to her was having crabs and beer in the backyard accompanied by friends and neighbors in the Loch Raven community close to Mt. Pleasant Golf Course and in later years in Loch Raven Village.
Maureen was also a lover of all animals. Some of her significant pets, when she was a little girl in Halethorpe, include chickens Cluck Cluck, Henny Hen Hen, and Girlie. Later, from 1970 to 1992, it was the beloved family cat, Whiskers.
Maureen was very much a patriot and faithful Christian. She enjoyed the Bicentennial ceremonies of July 4th, 1976. Ironically, she would pass 50 years later to the day. What is remarkable is that she was related to William Hooper through her father's side of the family. William Hooper was one of the 56 great signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Maureen is survived by her three children, Kimberly Kordela and husband, Jeff; Ted Turnbaugh and wife, Sallie; and Steven Turnbaugh and wife, Brenda. She also has four granddaughters, Kaitlyn Kordela, Kelly Gardner (and husband Samuel), Juliana Kordela, and Emily Turnbaugh. Maureen had wonderful times at holiday occasions with her in-laws, Gus and Patricia Wessels, and nieces Beth, Pattie, Susan, Laura, Dawn, and Teri, as well as her nephews Jim, David, and Donald, and all of their significant others and children. She loved them all so much!
We will miss her terribly as she made an indelible mark on all of our lives. She was a beautiful lady both inside and out. Job well done Mom … job well done!!!
