Obituary

On November 23rd Mary Markakis passed away at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her husband James Markakis and survived by her daughters Christina, Marianne, Diane and Johanne, her son and daughter-in-law Nicolas and Phaedra Markakis and her grandchildren James Markakis, Argiroula and Jeffrey Mahony.

Mary was born and grew up in Baltimore and attended Western High School. After marrying and while raising 5 children at age 40 she attended Towson University and completed her BA degree in Music. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation community and sang for many years in the church choir.

Mary was a music lover and musician and played piano and French horn from a young age. She later became a dedicated member of the Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra for over 30 years. Besides participating as a mandolinist, she occasionally made musical arrangements for mandolin to be played by the orchestra and for some years welcomed the members as friends into her home for weekly rehearsals and informal musical gatherings.

In her spare time Mary also did volunteer work in the Baltimore community.

Mary was especially devoted to her family and her memory will always be cherished by them.

Service and interment private.
