Mary
Dardamanis
d. Dec 1, 2025
On December 1, 2025, Mary Dardamanis (nee Markulis), age 95, passed away peacefully after a brief illness. She was the last of seven siblings who were the children of George and Athena Markulis. The Markulis couple immigrated from the Island of Rhodes, Greece in the spring of 1924, with two eight-month-old twin daughters, and settled in East Baltimore. Mary was born on June 5, 1930, and was one of five additional children born in the family home at 151 N. Linwood Avenue. In 1931, she was given the baptismal name "Marietta."
She graduated from Patterson Park High School in 1948 and first worked at Baltimore City Hospital as a senior stenographer clerk until 1953. From 1946-1950, Mary was a member of the "Evangelismos" (Annunciation) church choir and participated in numerous Greek school plays during her youth. In 1952, she married Christos Dardamanis, and they were blessed with one daughter, Athena, born in 1953. Mary returned to work in 1958, securing employment at Fort Holabird recording and transcribing dictation where she enjoyed a successful career for sixteen years.
Mary and Chris traveled to Greece in 1960 – a trip which she often recalled with fond memories. Later, she went to Greece with her daughter, Athena, and other family members to visit their many relatives on the Island of Rhodes. In the mid-1960s, Mary provided great support to her husband who began a new business venture opening a country western bar called "Stabiles," which flourished for over 27 years on Eastern Avenue near Highlandtown. Following the sale of the bar business, Mary was again supportive when Chris decided to open a new restaurant called "Stables" in Westminster, Maryland.
Mary began the next chapter of her career when she resumed working in 1977 for the Social Security Administration in the Office of Hearings and Appeals at the Rotunda in Hampden. As a Legal Clerk, she would type detailed notes during case hearings and help transcribe information from dictating machines. She thoroughly enjoyed her work, met many people from diverse backgrounds, and received awards for her excellent performance until her retirement in 1990. Also, for many years Mary hosted Christmas Day parties, celebrating her husband's name day, complete with music and dancing at 149 N. Linwood Avenue.
After nearly 60 years of marriage, Mary saw her beloved Christos peacefully pass away in 2011 at the age of 81. Six years later, in 2017, she was heartbroken when her daughter Athena tragically died at the age of 64 after enjoying an impressive career at the United States Post Office. With quiet dignity and courage, she moved forward with her independent life on Linwood Avenue. Mary, just like her daughter Athena, was an avid animal lover. Over the years, they both took loving care of many dogs. Her passion for animals continued and brought her a great sense of comfort.
Mary was also pre-deceased by her loving sisters and brothers: Panayiota Jaskiewicz, Zinovia Prevas, Thomas G. Markulis, Amalia Tomczewski, Olga Matsos, and Basil G. Markulis. She is survived by a dear sister-in-law Eva Dardamanis. Also survived by 15 nieces and nephews and 20 great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at the Chapel of the Holy Resurrection, Greek Orthodox Cemetery, 5917 Windsor Mill Road, Baltimore, Maryland, 21207. The viewing for Mrs. Dardamanis will take place in the cemetery chapel from 10:30 - 11:00am, at which time the funeral service will begin. Interment services to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, 24 W. Preston Street, Baltimore MD 21201.
Her nieces and nephews will always cherish the memories of those wonderful family gatherings on Linwood Avenue. We pray that Mary will experience a glorious reunion in heaven with all her loved ones that she often reminisced about during her final years.
May her memory be eternal!
