Obituary

Maria Petrucci Corfidi died late Thursday evening, 16 January 2025 at Stella Maris in Timonium, MD. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. Maria Petrucci was born on 14 May 1925 at 825 Hollins Street in Baltimore, Maryland to Irma (née D'Angelo) Petrucci and Pietro Petrucci. She was the eldest sibling of sister Tina and brother Stephen. Maria attended Baltimore City Public Schools, including Hamilton Elementary and Hamilton Junior High, before graduating from Eastern High School in 1943. Maria worked at Hutzler's Brothers Department Store in downtown Baltimore during high school before joining the Baltimore Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank in 1945. She left the bank to tend to the birth of her son, Stephen in 1958.

Following the death of her husband Frank in April 1980, Maria returned to work at the Equitable Trust Company (later, Maryland National Bank and Nation's Bank) in Baltimore. She remained with those institutions until retiring in 1995. Shortly after birth, Maria moved with her parents to near Patterson Park on Potomac Street in East Baltimore, where her sister and brother were born. The family then moved to a new house built by Pietro and his fellow stone mason brother, Frank, on Marietta Avenue in the Hamilton section of Baltimore in 1932. In the early 1940s Maria befriended Mrs. Mary Giannerini (née Corfidi), originally of Hershey, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Giannerini was a newlywed at the time, having moved across the street from Maria following her marriage to Michael Giannerini, Sr. Through Mary, Maria became acquainted with Mary's older brother, Frank Corfidi. Frank had just returned from World War II service in Germany with the United States Army. Although several years older than her, Maria knew immediately that Frank was the man of her dreams. Maria often recounted how she asked Frank to a 1948 Christmas dance that the Federal Reserve Bank was hosting. Frank accepted the invitation. The couple dated less than a year before marrying on 4 September 1949 at St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church in Hamilton. Frank and Maria saved money during their newlywed years by renting a third-floor apartment on nearby Bayonne Avenue. In 1953 the couple purchased a vacant lot on Old Harford Road, not far from Maria's childhood home. With the help of Maria's father and uncle, they designed and built a two-story, Butler-stone home that took more than a year to construct; they moved in in August 1954. The house was the couple's pride and joy; Maria felt fortunate to have been able to remain there nearly 70 years. She worked tirelessly to maintain the property, inside and out; her exacting yard-work efforts were known even to passing strangers. Maria especially valued upkeep of the home's contents. As a "child of the Depression," as she often said, she endeavored to never waste a dime. The same 1949 Crosley-brand refrigerator that she and Frank had purchased as newlyweds in 1949 served her the entire time she lived on Old Harford Road. That refrigerator shared kitchen space with the original, car-dashboard-like General Electric "Stratoliner" stove that was installed when the house was built. Both the refrigerator and stove remained spotless to the end. Maria and Frank were blessed with their only child, son Stephen in September 1958.

Together they were a devoted family, enjoying the presence of many nearby relatives and good neighbors, including, coincidentally, the family of one of Maria's first cousins, Ida Jean D'Angelo Funk, whose home was located immediately behind theirs. Maria was especially pleased when son Stephen married Sarah (née Taylor)in 2004, and with the subsequent birth of her three beautiful grandchildren, Nicholas, Jonathan, and Anna Marie. Finally, it was no secret that Maria had a special fondness for animals. Some of her favorite cat and dog companions over the years were "Skippy," "Tabby," "Taffy," "Christy," "Cali," and, most recently, "Ebony." Maria is survived by her sister Tina LaRosa Maloney, brother Stephen Petrucci (Rita, deceased), son Stephen, daughter-in-law Sarah, grandchildren Nicholas, Jonathan, and Anna Marie, nieces Linda LaRosa and Laura Giannerini Clark Burden (James, deceased), and nephew Michael Giannerinni (Roxanne), grandnephew Alex Clark (Amy), Michael Giannerini, Marissa Bevin (Chris), and three great-nieces and nephew. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Frank, in April 1980. Those who knew Maria will miss her strong-willed advocacy and defense of whatever concern was on her mind, her penchant for cleanliness and order, and her ability to find a good deal — whether at the supermarket or department store.
