Obituary

We give thanks for the life and ministry of Pastor Marcia Thompson, a devoted servant of God whose faith, compassion, and adventurous spirit touched the lives of many. She was a beloved pastor, friend, and mentor to many throughout her life and ministry, forming lifelong friendships across every community she served.

Born in Reading, PA, Pastor Marcia's path was guided by both service and faith. She was a graduate of East Stroudsburg College, earned a Master's in Religion from Gettysburg Seminary, and completed her Master of Divinity through the seminary in Philadelphia. Her internship took hr to Texas, followed by her first call as associate pastor in Bloomington, Minnesota. She served faithfully at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Baltimore from 1988–1993 before being called to St. John's Sweet Air, where she was senior pastor from 1993–1998. She later returned to Pennsylvania to serve at Zion Lutheran Church before moving to Florida where she had spent her well-earned retirement years in The Villages.

Her ministry was preceded by a remarkable foundation of service: she was a youth director, a missionary in Germany and Nigeria, a volunteer at the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation, a military tour guide, and a camp counselor. She was also a world traveler with a love of people and cultures—most notably, she spent time in Germany during the historic fall of the Berlin Wall, a moment that deeply moved and inspired her.

Pastor Marcia's life was filled with color, curiosity, and creativity. She loved dogs, skiing, swimming, playing guitar, painting in watercolor, and writing. Her warm spirit and sense of humor endeared her to many, both within the churches she served and the friendships she nurtured throughout her journey.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, Florence and Richard Thompson. Surviving family members are her brother Richard Thompson, sister, Vanessa Thompson,  nephew, Dr. Richard Thompson , and several great niece and nephews.

True to her humble and faithful heart, Pastor Marcia requested a simple graveside service at St. John's Cemetery, where she had thoughtfully arranged for her final resting place years ago. The service will take place at 12:00 noon on Sunday, July 13, 2025

Those who knew Pastor Marcia—whether in a pew, on a mission trip, or in the quiet moments of counsel and prayer—will remember her as a woman of deep faith, intellect, compassion, and joy. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
