Obituary

Joseph William "Joe" Hanle, age 90, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026 at his home in Bel Air, Maryland.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Joe lived a life defined by faith, love, hard work, and perseverance. In 1956, he married the love of his life, Nina Orlando. Nina predeceased him, but Joe carried her memory with him always.

Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his children: Joseph Hanle (Lydia), Donna Swisko, Stephen Hanle (Daphne), and Kathy Gregory (Fred); ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Eileen Hitchingham and brothers Richard Hanle and John Hanle.

Joe later remarried Mary Arcilesi in 1992.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Julia Hanle, and his brother Ken Hanle.

Joe proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958. He attended St. Dominic Elementary School, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, and Johns Hopkins University, where he also played soccer, a sport he loved and excelled in.

An accomplished electrical engineer, Joe worked for General Electric Company, Hanle Electric Company, Keystone Electric Company, Bird Engineering, and Rail Company. His professional life reflected the same determination that defined his personal journey.

Joe was known for being hardworking and having a good sense of humor. Above all, Joe's life was rooted in his faith in God, his deep love for Nina, and his devotion to family.

Guided by his faith, Joe believed deeply in perseverance and the importance of not giving up. With the loving encouragement of his wife Nina, he made the decision to return to college while working full time and raising four children, ultimately graduating from Johns Hopkins University. Their shared sacrifice and commitment reflected Joe's belief that with faith, determination, and support, it is always possible to move forward.
