Joseph P. Taymans, beloved educator, coach, and family man, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old.
Born on September 21, 1935, Joe was a dedicated educator and passionate soccer coach who touched countless lives throughout his career. A graduate of Mt. St. Joseph High School in 1953, he went on to earn his teaching degree from Towson State Teachers College in June 1958.
Joe taught for 19 years at Patterson High School in Baltimore, and made an indelible mark as the head soccer coach. His coaching excellence was particularly notable during the late 1960s, when he led the team to four consecutive Maryland Scholastic Association (MSA) Championships. His dedication to his students and athletes was unwavering.
After his teaching career, Joe served as Assistant Principal at Pikesville Senior High School before retiring from Baltimore County's educational system in January 1988. Retirement did not slow him down; instead, he purchased and lovingly restored Happy Shak in Northern Baltimore County, which became his permanent residence in 2002.
Joe was a devoted family man. He married his beloved wife Helen Konieczny on June 16, 1956, and they shared a loving partnership until her passing in November 2001. They were blessed with two children, Patricia A. Taymans and Joseph P. Taymans, Jr., and a granddaughter, Jessica Marie.
A proud veteran, Joe served in the Army National Guard from 1956 to 1959. In his later years, he was an active member of the American Legion Post 200 in Hampstead, Maryland, finding camaraderie and continued purpose in serving his fellow veterans.
Joe's life was defined by his love for sports, particularly coaching soccer, his joy in becoming a grandfather, his pride in restoring Happy Shak, and his commitment to community through the American Legion. His sense of humor, friendliness, and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughter Patricia A. Taymans and his granddaughter Jessica Marie. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, his son Joseph P. Taymans, Jr., and many dear friends.
