Obituary

Joseph Kenneth Conwell, longtime resident of Phoenix, MD, late of Joppa, MD, passed away peacefully of the complications of old age on December 30, 2024 at the age of 92 and moved to his new home through Jesus in heaven.  Born on Christmas Day, 1932, in Pittsburgh, PA, Ken lived a long and fulfilling life.  Initially married to his love Shirley Wise Conwell on November 17, 1956, they made a happy family with surviving children Scott Alan Conwell and Victoria Conwell Bracken.  The family had a wonderful life in Toledo, Ohio and Phoenix, Maryland, and notably vacationed by regular automobile trips to visit relatives throughout the U.S. all the way to California to Florida to Illinois to Pennsylvania and points in-between.  Ken was predeceased by Shirley, who passed away in May 2003, and his brother John William "Bill" Conwell and sister Shirley Conwell Gorz.  Ken was lucky to find true love again and married Rosalie Kivinski Conwell on November 3, 2010.  Rose lovingly remembers their wedding and honeymoon in Hawaii and many evenings dancing together.  He is fondly remembered by Victoria's husband Ronald Bracken, nephew Larry Lorey and his wife Jeanie, their son Sean Lorey, nieces Debbie Wise, Linda Davis, and Cheryl Bogard, nephews Steve and Stuart Conwell, grandchild Brandon Conwell and family "Uncle" Rod MoragneEl.  Family poker evenings with the extended family and friends are a great memory.  Visits with "Grandpa Ken" were cherished by Scott's wife Nina, and his grandchildren Andrei, Varvara, Grant Kenneth and Scott Larry Rod Conwell.

Ken was enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and honorably discharged in 1955, receiving the National Defense Service Medal for service in the Korean War.  He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Duquesne University in 1962.  He attained the distinguished professional underwriting designation CPCU. He worked for the USF&G Company in Pittsburgh, PA, Toledo, OH, and at its brand new skyscraper in Baltimore, MD, becoming the head of its Reinsurance Department and retiring after 38 years in 1992.  Following his retirement, he became a licensed pilot and flew small planes as a hobby as well as regularly seeking to improve his golf game with many friends.  Ken volunteered in his children's activities as pee wee football and little league baseball assistant coach, head softball coach, assistant and head Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 774 in Glen Arm, leader of an incredible expedition to Philmont Scout Ranch where they hiked many miles through New Mexico mountains and valleys, and as assistant lacrosse coach with head coach son Scott for his young grandchild Brandon.

The family will receive family and friends at Ruck-Towson Funeral Home, 1050 York Road (at beltway exit 26), on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, 6 - 8 PM.  A memorial service will be held at Ruck-Towson Funeral Home on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 11:00 AM followed by a procession for internment at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, 200 East Padonia Road, Timonium, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ken's name, to honor of his wife Shirley, to: LUNGevity Foundation, which researches and supports the fight against lung cancer at https://www.lungevity.org/
