Ulrich, D.D.S.

On July 11, 2025, John C. Ulrich D. D. S., a practitioner of general dentistry in northeast Baltimore and Towson for 38 years. Dr. Ulrich attended elementary schools in Baltimore. He attended Calvert Hall College, Loyola College and he was a 1953 graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School.
During World War II, he served in the U. S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre from 1944-1946 as a Navy trained weatherman assigned to the staff of Vice Admiral Daniel E. Barbey, Commander of the Seventh Amphibious Force. Admiral Barbey was an early pioneer of amphibious warfare and he and his staff carried out much of the planning and implementation of General Douglas MacArthur's campaigns in the Pacific area, particularly in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands.
Dr. Ulrich was a member of the Baltimore County Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He was an early advocate of pre-paid dental insurance programs and during the sixties, he was a member of the Board of Directors and then President of the Maryland Dental Service Corp. which, in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland, created and marketed the Maryland Dental Plan, a highly successful venture into the field of dental health insurance.
For thirteen years, Dr. Ulrich was the attending dentist for the retired School Sisters of Notre Dame at their retirement center, Notchcliff in Glen Arm, Maryland and also at the School Sisters of Notre Dame Mother House in Baltimore.
Dr. Ulrich and his late wife Emily Mercer Ulrich were married for 71 years. He is survived by his son John C. Ulrich Jr. of Savannah, Georgia (Randall) and his daughter Kathryn Ulrich Tsai (Dr. Allan Tsai) of Columbia, Maryland. Dr. Ulrich was preceded in death by two other daughters, Mary Anne McKinnon and Carole Brent Simmonds formerly of Baltimore.
