Obituary

John "Jack" Lindung passed away March 8 in Naples, Florida after a brief illness.  In his final days he was surrounded by loving family and friends.

Born to Dorothy Schley Lindung and Samuel A. Lindung on Valentine's Day in 1939, Jack was the youngest of six children.  He attended St. Paul's Parochial School and St. Dominic's before graduating Loyola High School in Towson in 1956.  Jack remained an active and proud Loyola Alumnus throughout his life.

He attended Loyola College in Baltimore, graduating in 1960 and then entered the US Naval Officer's Candidate School.  His Naval career spanned eight years and included duty as a Weapons Officer (First Lieutenant) aboard the USS Walton 1960-1963; US Naval Destroyer School in Newport, Rhode Island 1963-1964; Operations Officer (Lieutenant) aboard the USS Taussig 1964-1966; and US Navy Bureau of Personnel (BUPERS) in Washington, DC 1966-1968, where Jack was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.

It was during his time at the Naval Destroyer School that Jack met his late wife Meredith Louise Mikulis who served in the US Navy Nurse Corps.  They were married 31 years until her passing in 1995.  The couple provided a loving home for four children – as parents to Kevin and Karen Lindung and legal guardians to Jack's nephew Bryan and niece Valerie Lindung.

After his resignation from the Navy in 1968, Jack began his successful career in finance.  His career included positions with Merrill Lynch, where he was a member of the President's Club; Alex Brown and Sons, where he was a consistent member of the 1800 Club; Kidder Peabody and Paine Webber.

During this time Jack was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as the Grand Knight of St. Jude Council in Baltimore and Charter Grand Knight of Long Green Valley Council in Hydes, Maryland.  He was also an avid collector of diecast toy cars and trucks.  His collection at its peak was 18,000 vehicles – the majority of which were Coca-Cola trucks that he proudly displayed in a toy room in his home.

In 1998, Jack married Mary Beth Christman, and they moved to Grey Oaks in Naples, Florida upon his retirement in 2000.  The couple traveled extensively throughout the world and were particularly fond of ocean and river cruises, reminding Jack of his time in the Navy. Jack was an avid golfer and member of Grey Oaks Country Club and Vineyards Country Club.  He could be found on the golf course three to four times per week.

Away from the golf course, Jack's favorite activity was to spend time with his extended family.  He welcomed his children and grandchildren to his home and often had them travel with Marybeth and him on their adventures.

Jack was a devout Catholic throughout his life.  He had a profound love of God and Country.

Jack is survived by his wife of 27 years, Mary Beth; son Kevin Lindung; daughter Karen Anderson; stepsons John and Kevin Sweeney; several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
