Obituary

On October 19, 2024, John F. "Jack" Miller, Jr., beloved husband of Joanne Miller (nee Kontje); devoted father of Mary Samuels and her husband Brent, John F. Miller, III. and his wife Lucy, Brian F. Miller and his wife Kristin and Meagan Miller; loving grandfather of Mary, Caitlin, Conor, Ian, Hayden, Maddy, Magnus, Flynn, Quinn, Ella, Iris, and Arwen; dear brother of Annemarie Sytnyk and her husband Jerry and Frederic Miller and his wife Mary Ann.

Jack was a proud son of Jersey City, NJ where he attended St. Aloysius High School before graduation from Seton Hall University with a degree in History. After graduation from Seton Hall, Jack spent two years in the United States Army.

Upon his return from the Army, Jack began his career in commercial underwriting which would span several decades. Through a work friend, Jack met Joanne after a first date at the Canton Tea Garden followed by the movie "The Flower Drum Song", it was the beginning of a wonderful life with his beloved wife. Together they would raise four children and enjoy 60 years of marriage together.

Work brought Jack and his family to Maryland in 1972. They settled in a house on Wickersham Way, and for forty years, their home at 317 was the hub of family holidays and celebrations. Jack often shared his regret for not having a guest book to chronicle the nonstop parade of his children's friends that they hosted through the high school and college years.

Jack and Joanne were parishioners at St. Joseph's Texas, always active in school and parish activates. Jack was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus for many years as a member of the Fourth Degree and served in a variety of roles including Grand Knight and District Deputy. His fellow Knights were some of his closest friends.

To his final days, Jack was an avid reader, voraciously consuming nonfiction books on history, trains and the military. He read the New York Times ("All the News That's Fit to Print") from cover to cover each date for as long as anyone can remember. Jack also loved old movies, especially John Ford westerns. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the actors in most films and could produce a verbal filmography for golden age actors at a moments notice. Jack celebrated his Irish ancestry as a flag bearer for Na Fianna Pipe Band, and took great pride marching in the annual Baltimore St. Patrick's Day parade for many years. In retirement, Jack embraced his love of trains as a docent at the B&O Railroad Museum for more than 10 years.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 24, 2024, 10 AM at St. Joseph Church, Cockeysville, 100 Church Lane, Cockeysville, Maryland 21030. Interment St. Joseph Church Cockeysville Cemetery.
