Obituary

On April 11, 2026, Major General John "Jack" Earl Griffith (retired) passed away peacefully in Cockeysville, Maryland, at the age of 95.  General Griffith was born and raised in Kansas.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948, and retired in 1990. In 1957, he went to Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.  He served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War and had assignments in Denmark, Japan, and across the United States.  He was a trailblazer in transportation and logistics functions, serving in senior positions in the Strategic Air Command, the Military Airlift Command, and in the Directorate of Transportation at Air Force Headquarters.  He was instrumental in launching the U.S. Transportation Command, serving as its first Director of Operations and Logistics.  He also served as Commander of the Defense Fuels Supply Center. With over 41 years of active service, he held the record for length of service in the Air Force when he retired.

In retirement, Jack lived initially in Belleville, Illinois, with his beloved wife of 73 years, Bonita (Bonnie) Irene Bowman Griffith.  In 2018, they moved to Broadmead Retirement Community in Cockeysville. Jack and Bonnie were both heavily involved in the Broadmead community and Jack served as President of the Broadmead Residents Association. No matter where he was, Jack followed his curiosity about people and the world and put his energy into service for others.

Jack is survived by Bonnie and by numerous children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Loving father of John E. Griffith, Jr. (Beverly), Linda G. Griffith (Paul Korntheuer), Steven R. Griffith, Michael A. Griffith (Antoinette), and David E. Griffith (Pam Pannacci).
