Obituary

James Hill "Jimmy" Gant, 84, died on July 13, 2024, in Baltimore, MD, after a lengthy illness. He was born on May 3, 1940, in Winston-Salem, NC, the son of deceased James Sample Gant and Annie Hill Tuttle Gant of Walkertown, NC, and is survived by his only sibling, Robert E. Gant, who lives in Charleston, SC. After graduating from Walkertown High School, Jimmy attended Brevard College, NC, and Pfeiffer College (now University), Misenheimer, NC. He worked for a brief time at his family's business, Gant Oil Company in Walkertown. Moving to Baltimore, he continued with his studies at Towson State University, began studying Spanish with a native tutor, and he pursued a passion for ballroom dancing. After achieving the "Gold Bar-Star" Standard of Excellence at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio, he qualified to perform in national exhibitions and compete abroad- notably including Atlantic City, Baltimore, Dallas, Las Vegas, New Orleans, New York City, Vienna Austria and Rome, Italy. A soft-spoken person, he was friendly to everyone and always treated others with kindness and respect. His cremated remains will be interred in the Gant family plot at Love's United Methodist Church Cemetery in Walkertown, and there will be a private memorial. The family would like to express gratitude to Ruth Fox, Sally Gant, Betty Quick, Petranda Simmons, staff of the Maples at Stoneleigh and Gilchrist Hospice Care Towson.
