Helen J. Morekas
January 14, 1934 – September 30, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen J. Morekas, who left us peacefully in her sleep on September 30, 2024, at the age of 90, after several difficult months. Helen passed away in the early morning hours at Gilchrist Hospice, surrounded by love. Helen lived independently.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on January 14, 1934, Helen grew up working in her family's landmark business, The Oriole Tower and Baking Company. Small but mighty ,she faced many challenges in life but emerged a strong and proud Baltimore woman, forever celebrating her Spartan heritage.
In 1955, Helen, daughter of James & Katina Karukas, married the love of her life, John Morekas, son of Speros & Katina Morekas. Together, they enjoyed 55 years of marriage until John's passing in 2010. The couple was well-known and beloved in their community, often seen at Greek weddings, baptisms, and bowling with the Hellenic League on Tuesday nights in Timonium. In the mid 1970's, Helen was honored to be named Mother of the Year by the Junior GOYAns, a recognition that reflected her deep commitment to supporting youth activities. Helen and John opened their home to countless gatherings, always hosting with love and generosity.
Those who knew Helen knew she cherished life's simple pleasures—hot fudge sundaes, grilled cheese sandwiches, and her faithful dog, Daisy. But most of all, she adored her children: Karen, Spero, and Demi, as well as her grandson, John, who became the light of her life.
In the 1980s, Helen bravely stepped out of her comfort zone and took a job at Smyth Jewelers, where she flourished both professionally and personally, exceeding sales quotas and forming lifelong friendships.
Helen's greatest joy came when she became a grandmother in the1996, dedicating herself fully to caring for her grandson, John, as his mother returned to work. As proud grandparents, they filled their days with fountains, volcanoes, and Pokemon. Recently, she was especially grateful for the opportunity to make two trips to Florida to visit her daughter, Demi.
Helen was a lifelong Baltimore Orioles fan, and her love for the team was as unwavering as her love for her family and community. Helen is preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Morekas and brothers Peter, Harry, and John. She is survived by her children: Karen Kotapka and Louis Novakis, Spero Morekas and his wife, Lisa (Culotta) Morekas, and Demi Morekas; her grandson, John Morekas and many cherished nieces, nephews, and Godchildren.
