Obituary

George Edward Thomsen, beloved husband of the late Mary Ellen Thomsen (nee Reinert), and former trusts and estates attorney with the Baltimore firm of Thomsen and Burke, died peacefully at Roland Park Place on August 26 at the age of 93.  A man of steady temperament, graciousness, intelligence and wit, Mr. Thomsen was measured in speech and a keen listener.

Son of the late Honorable Roszel C. Thomsen and Carol Wolf Thomsen of Baltimore, Mr. Thomsen was born in 1930.  He attended Calvert School and Gilman School before matriculating to Harvard College in 1948, where he sang in the Harvard Glee Club and was an Air Force ROTC cadet.  Weeks after graduation from Harvard in 1952, George was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and assigned to Kunsan Air Base in South Korea during the Korean War.  Upon his return, he entered Harvard Law School, receiving his J.D. in 1957.

Beyond his law practice, Mr. Thomsen was a devoted member of Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church (Woodbrook), where he served as Clerk of Session.  As a member of the congregation at Roland Park Presbyterian Church later in life, Mr. Thomsen chaired the search committee that brought the current pastor of 17 years, Mark Hanna, to the church.  Mr. Thomsen's own passion for, and devotion to, local educational institutions included serving on the boards of the Gilman School (President of the Board 1985-1990), Goucher College (longtime Treasurer), and St. Mary's Seminary and University.

His greatest love, though, was for his family. In 1955, Mr. Thomsen met the love of his life in Cambridge, Massachusetts–Mary Ellen Reinert, then Alumni Feature Editor for the Harvard Alumni Bulletin.  The two married in 1955 and settled in Baltimore in 1957, where they raised three sons.

Mr. Thomsen, dear brother of the late Grace Thomsen Babcock and Margaret Thomsen Moler, is survived by his sons (and daughters-in-law) Roszel C. Thomsen II (Dorothy Gay) of Maryland, Stewart G. Thomsen (Rosemary Thomsen) of Massachusetts, Laurence W. Thomsen (Julie Checkoway) of California; and seven grandchildren: Meghan Thomsen, Caroline Thomsen, Philip Thomsen, Sarah Thomsen, John Thomsen, Abigail Thomsen, and Stevie Thomsen.

An open celebration of life service will be held at Roland Park Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 21 at 2:00 PM, with a reception to follow at the church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Thomsen can be made to the Gilman School or Goucher College.
