Obituary

On May 17, 2026, Gary Lee Hartwig passed at his home in Cockeysville, Maryland with his wife, Linda Grace Hartwig (nee Regler), of 57 years by his side.  Their longtime friends, Ronald and Barbara Schwartz, were nearby supporting them in their time of need.  Although Gary said he would have liked more time, he was satisfied with a long life well lived.  He left behind a loving family and many friends.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Terri L. Dwyer and her husband, Matthew J. Dwyer; son, Eric S. Hartwig; and grandchildren, Madelyn A. Dwyer, Keira E. Dwyer, and Nathaniel J. Dwyer.  Gary was the brother of David "Butch" C. Hartwig, Stephen A. Hartwig and his wife, Kathy Windisch; and the late John "Jack" T. Hartwig, Jr.

On September 27, 1945, Gary was born to John T. Hartwig and Miriam E. Hartwig (nee Harner).  He grew up in Baltimore City and Rosedale.   He proudly graduated high school from Calvert Hall College in 1963 where he competed on the swim team.  In 1966, he met the woman he would marry while working at Montgomery Wards in the Eudowood Shopping Center.  They were married on August 31, 1968.  He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Baltimore in 1969 and was immediately drafted into the United States Army.  Trained as a medic, he served in the Vietnam War.  Gary was wounded in combat while giving aid to a fellow soldier.  For the rest of his life, Gary carried a piece of shrapnel in his body that he proudly named "Skippy."  The United States awarded Gary the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his actions.  Gary wore his Blackhorse 11th Armored Calvery hat with pride, and enjoyed swapping war stories with veterans whenever he would meet them.

After his honorable discharge, he returned to his wife in Baltimore and had a long career in the printing industry as vice president of The Paul Company, Inc. and specialized in the microfilming of Court documents.  He served as president of the Association for Information and Image Management, Maryland Chapter, in 1984.  He developed a hobby photographing nature and architecture.  After his retirement in 2009, he enjoyed watching football, soccer, and his grandchildren.  He also reconnected with his Calvert Hall classmates regularly.

The family will receive friends at the Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 York Road, Towson, Maryland on Tuesday, June 2nd from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be celebrated at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 3rd at 11:30am.

The inurnment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gary's memory to the Vietnam Veterans of America www.vva.org or Calvert Hall College High School, 8102 LaSalle Road, Towson, Maryland 21286, www.calverthall.com .
