On December 4, 2024 at 7:01am Eleanor Antoinette Myers (nee Thomas) took her last breath to be with the Lord. She was reunited with her husband of 60 years (41 earthly), Thomas Myers whom had been waiting for his wife for 19 years. What an amazing reunion it must have been!
Eleanor was born June 13, 1944 in NE Baltimore to Ernest and Eleanora Thomas. She joined an older brother of 2 years Louis. A polio survivor whom lived apart from her family while she recovered in the hospital, she learned to be brave, independent, but mostly she came to appreciate her family.
At 11 years old Eleanor met a boy named Tommy and by 13, she knew she wanted to marry him. They did indeed marry at 19 years old on Groundhog Day February 2, 1964. Quickly their family grew with the addition of a son Thomas and a daughter Christine. In 1970, they moved from a rented apartment in Laurelville to a home in Hamilton where they lived together for the next 35 years.
Eleanor quickly became the fun neighborhood Mom by providing KoolAid and freeze pops during the hot summer days and popcorn and soda when watching made for TV movies. A Catholic neighborhood full of kids made for plenty of children in and out of her home including nieces and nephews who lived nearby.
She became active in the #236 Hamilton Elementary school volunteering and picketing when the school system tried to implement busing. It was here she met her bestfriends Norma, Pat, and Carolyn. She also became active in the Overlea Fullerton Football program working the concession stand while her husband coached football, son played football and daughter did cheerleading. Her favorite tasks were fitting the boys with mouth guards, bandaging skinned knees on the cheerleaders, and teaching the young kids ordering snacks at the stand on how to count money and check for the correct change. It was through the football program Eleanor made long lasting friends with many football families. As time went by she met more close friends including Margo, Linda and Debbie.
The family house, a fixer upper, took about 20 years to become modern and fully functioning, but before that Mom made it a home. She was a good cook making the best fried chicken, potato salad, sour beef and dumplings, crab cakes and crab imperial. For 50 years she threw amazing Christmas Eve parties along with baby showers, wedding showers and even a wedding. All were welcome and the more people the merrier.
After the death of Eleanor's husband in 2005, she finally overcame her fear of driving, getting her drivers license at 62 years old. She continued to live in their family home until 2023 when she needed 24 hour care. She moved to Arden's Court of Towson a memory care facility where they took good care of her.
In addition to her husband and parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her brother Louis Thomas and survived by her sister-in-law Ellen along with their son Jeffrey. On the Myers side, Eleanor is preceded in death by brother-in-laws Donald, Jerry, Bob and Chuck. She is survived by brother-in-laws Raymond, and Fredrick. She is survived by sister-in-laws Joan, Patsy, Ann, Grace and Susan. Also Eleanor is preceded in death by her nephew John Busan. She is also survived by too many nieces and nephews to name (you know who you are!) along with their children and grandchildren making her a great-great aunt. She is also survived by 2 granddaughters Valerie and Sophia.
