Obituary

Donald Slater Koenig passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cardia sarcoidosis.  He was 47 years old.

Born on February 13, 1979, in Towson, Maryland, Don grew up in Baltimore County and graduated from Loyola Blakefield in 1997. He later attended Towson University, where he studied broadcasting and discovered his lifelong love of radio, music, and storytelling.

Don built his career as a Systems Engineer for Johns Hopkins, but throughout the Baltimore area he was equally known and deeply loved for his work with WIYY 98 Rock. He began as a morning show producer for Kirk, Mark, and Lopez, and later became an on-air personality known as "Cap'n Don." His quick wit, playful humor, and unmistakable presence made him a favorite among listeners and friends alike. He had a rare ability to brighten any room—or radio booth—simply by being himself.

Above all else, Don was a devoted husband and father. His greatest joy was spending time with his girls, and he shared stories of his love and pride for them with anyone who would listen. He was known for his passion for music, his legendary collection of records, arcade games, pinball machines, and hats, and for the endless stream of pun-filled jokes that became an essential part of who he was. His home was always a place of welcome, laughter, and connection. Loyal, generous, and warm-hearted, Don created community wherever he went.

Don was also deeply involved in the NDP community, especially through Father's Folly, which reignited his creative spark and love of entertaining. This group embraced him wholeheartedly, and the friendships and support he found there carried him with comfort and strength throughout his illness. He cherished this community deeply.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Amanda Koenig (née Miller); his daughters, Hailey and Isabel "Izzy"; his parents, Dr. William Martin Koenig Jr. and Kathryn Koenig (née Towson); his brother, William Martin Koenig III; sister-in-law Kristy Koenig; son-in-law of Teresa Miller and Francis Miller; brother-in-law Ryan Miller; sister-in-law Margaret Miller; niece Jessica Miller; niece Charlotte Koenig; and nephew William "Willy" Koenig.

He will be remembered for his humor, his kindness, his music, and the many friendships he built throughout his life. Don's voice, laughter, and spirit touched everyone who knew him, and his absence leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled. His memory will be cherished
always.
