David Mercer
Funk
Oct 28, 1947 — Jun 2, 2025
Timonium
David Mercer Funk was born on October 28, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the beloved son of Hannah Elizabeth (Mercer) and Frank Miller Herring Jr., and at birth was given the name Frank Miller Herring III. He was the adored grandson of Hannah Greenwood (Wheatley) and Beverly Howard Mercer, as well as Helen (LaGates) and Frank Miller Herring Sr., all of whom had a significant influence on his life. After his father died, his mother married Grady Funk, who adopted him. His parents changed his name to reflect their new family.
He married Corinne Kirk Maguire on August 31st, 1968 at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. Their wedding was officiated by Msgr. George Moeller. David converted to Catholicism in preparation for their marriage and remained a lifelong devout Catholic.
David received a BA in political science and government from Johns Hopkins University, a MA in history from the University of Wisconsin (Madison), and a JD from Harvard Law School. He served for four years in the Navy as an intelligence officer.
After building a practice and expertise in municipal and insurance law at Piper & Marbury (now DLA Piper), he joined Shapiro & Olander as a partner in 1988 and then founded his firm, Funk & Bolton, with partner Bryan Bolton in 1996. He led the firm for 22 years and enjoyed all aspects- the complex and engaging legal work; bulding and administering a business; and most of all, mentoring and supporting the lawyers and administrators. He was known for his intellect and quiet, but deep, wisdom. He was also proud to be admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court.
He chaired the board of the Bryn Mawr School from 1999 to 2002, one of his favorite experiences.
In spite of his professional achievements, his central commitment and focus was on his family.
He and Corinne were married for 56 years and lived at Mercy Ridge. His wife, three children, their spouses, and his five grandchildren meant everything to him.
He is survived by his beloved wife Corinne (Maguire) Funk. He was the adored father of Corinne (Funk) Hammons and her husband Lee Hammons; Nicholas Mercer Funk and his wife Kathrin (Odierno) Funk; and Katherine (Funk) Eisenberg and her husband Michael Eisenberg. He was the cherished grandfather of Caroline Clarke Hammons, Grace Mercer Hammons, Brennan Basilio Funk, Albie Maximilian Funk, and Andrew David Eisenberg.
He leaves his wife Corinne's five siblings, Frank, William, John, Susan (deceased), and Mary Maguire and their families.
He also leaves his first cousins, Robert L. Herring, Jr. and his wife Vickie, Michael Herring and his wife Liz, and Susan Ritter, as well as his stepsister Shirley (Funk) Hipley and her family.
