Dora Henriette (Horchler) Leanos was born in Budapest, Hungary, on October 12, 1938 to parents Henrik Horchler and Dora Nagy. Henriette died peacefully in her sleep in Parkville, MD on March 25, 2025 after an 11-year battle with Parkinson's disease. She is preceded in death by her brother Endre. She is survived by her husband James, sons Alexander (Anne), Nicholas, siblings Martin (Chantal), Gabriel (Joani), Beatrix (Dennis), grandson Christopher, 15 nieces and nephews and 19 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Henriette and her family immigrated to the United States in 1950. She attended Eden Hall Convent of the Sacred Heart, earned her undergraduate degree from Chestnut Hill College, and her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, all in Philadelphia, PA. She was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. She had a long and successful career at Goucher College from 1968 to 2003 where she taught French.
Henriette's passion for languages was complemented by a love for travel. Over her life, she built a rich and varied circle of friends with whom she was deliberate about maintaining contact and visiting. Henriette loved working with her hands. She was an avid gardener with a gift for creating serene backyard settings as well as plentiful vegetables. She was a master quilter and embroiderer. Her artistic talent, combined with unmatched patience and attention-to-detail, produced many beautiful items that are treasured by their numerous recipients.
Henriette (also known affectionately as "Muci") was the core of her large, extended family and her passing leaves a hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A Viewing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, 2025, from 4:00-7:00 pm EDT at Ruck Funeral Home, 1050 York Rd, Towson, MD 21204. Interment private. A Memorial Service and Mass is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 10:00 am EDT at the Oak Crest Chapel, 8800 Walther Blvd, Parkville, MD 21234.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that expressions of sympathy be made through charitable donations to "Johns Hopkins University" in support of the Movement Disorders Division. Contributions can be mailed to the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, 550 N. Broadway, Suite 731, Baltimore, MD 21205, with a note designating the gift for the Johns Hopkins Movement Disorders Division. Memorial donations may also be made online at https://secure.jhu.edu/form/neuro by selecting the "other" option and specifying "Movement Disorders" in memory of Dora Leanos.
