Obituary

Charlotte Rock Benson Wallace

Baltimore, Maryland

Charlotte Rock Benson Wallace, a lifelong resident of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, at Gilchrist Hospice in Baltimore.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Charles and Jesse Rock; her youngest son, Michael Kreig Wallace; and the fathers of her children, Charles E. Benson  and Stuart G. Wallace Sr.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Brenice J. Crissman, and her husband Keith R.; granddaughters Kassandra J.R. and Abigayle B.; and her dedicated son, Stuart G. Wallace Jr. She also leaves behind many cherished friends and extended family members whose lives she touched deeply.

Charlotte's journey began at St. Dominic's and was a graduate of Seton High School. She later pursued her love of knowledge by studying philosophy at Johns Hopkins University.  She entered the workforce as a teenager, beginning with C&P Telephone, followed by Martin Marietta Corporation and Triumph Motorcycle Corp. Her career found its heart with the City of Baltimore for 37 years, where she began as a secretary in the Mayor's Office under Mayor William Donald Schaefer and concluded as the Supervisor of Payroll and Disbursements—a position that reflected her reliability, intelligence, and unwavering work ethic.

Known as an independent and inquisitive soul, Charlotte was not one to be constrained by convention. She had a love of dancing and was a gifted dancer—from jitterbug to belly dancing—she brought joy and rhythm wherever she went. She also loved the outdoors and working in her yard, her friends lovingly referred to her as "the pioneer woman." Her home was a haven for foliage and animals, and she was a steadfast supporter of Native American and animal welfare causes, donating generously.

Charlotte never met a stranger. Her gift for conversation and connection led to lifelong friendships formed in the most unlikely places. She was a creative problem-solver, a fierce protector of her loved ones, and a welcoming figure known to many as "Mamma Wallace." She had been known to open her home to those in need—especially teenagers going through difficult times—she gave them stability, acceptance, and love that was needed to move forward in their lives, and she never sat in judgement of them.

Charlotte lived her life with deep compassion and an unshakable sense of loyalty. Once you were her friend, you were part of her family—forever.

A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Charlotte's honor to a local animal shelter or Native American organization of your choice.
