Obituary

Charles Rife Hilgartner, Jr

Charles Rife "Spook" Hilgartner, Jr, beloved husband of Anne Baetz Hilgartner, passed away on December 10th from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.  Spook and Anne recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.   Born and raised in Baltimore (Roland Park), Spook graduated from Calvert Hall College High School, Class of 1962, and Johns Hopkins University.  After college, he served in the Maryland Air National Guard, where his career in the field of technology began.

The most important things in Spook's life were his family and impacting the lives of others in a positive and lasting way. His greatest joy was watching his sons and grandchildren compete in a variety of sports, but especially on the lacrosse fields. He was an avid biker and had spent the last fifteen years teaching spinning classes.  Spook coached lacrosse his entire adult life with some of the following teams and programs…Loch Raven, Lutherville Timonium, Pimlico Lacrosse, Loch Raven Summer League, Maryvale, Greene Turtle, FCA and finally at McDonogh. Throughout his years, Spook impacted the international world of lacrosse by taking Lutherville teams to England, running clinics in Korea and serving as a liaison for the Australian National Team at the 1982 World Games. He also served as a lacrosse official for ten years. Spook was inducted into the Greater Baltimore Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2000.

Spook is survived by his wife, Anne; his son, Andy and his wife Shea; his son, Peter and his wife Kate; and eight grandchildren, Matt, Quinn, Scotty, Annie, Charlie, Jake, Hayes and Bennett.  He is predeceased by his eldest son Charles Rife Hilgartner, III. He is also survived by his brother, Dick Hilgartner and his wife Mary Lee, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a large extended family.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday January 4th at 10:30am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cockeysville, MD. The family will receive guests at 9:30am. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a scholarship in Spook's name at Calvert Hall College High School.  If desired, donations may be made to the "Spook Hilgartner Class of 1962 Scholarship Fund".
