On July 9, 2024, Charles Louis "Chuck" Bauermann, passed away peacefully at his home in Mays Chapel at the age of 91.
He was the beloved husband of Margaret "Peg" Hofmann Bauermann for 55 years. Peg preceded him in death in 2010.
Chuck was the devoted son of the late Florence Barnickol and her late husbands, Chuck's father, Carl Christian Bauermann, and step-father Frank G Barnickol, who later adopted Chuck and his sister, Les. He was the loving son-in-law of the late Margaret and Henry Hofmann.
He was the best and most loving father of Karen A Whitcome and late husband Jim Whitcome of Towson, MD; Cindy Foster and husband Jay Foster of Lafayette, CO; Peggy Stone and husband Michael Stone of Hunt Valley, MD; Chris Bauermann and wife Anne-Marie Bauermann of Parkton, MD and the late Mary Catherine "Cathy" Schwartz and husband, the late Jack Schwartz of Hunt Valley, MD
Chuck was the loving grandfather of Tim Whitcome, Sara Shaw, Ava Schwartz, Megan Oliver Rosen and her husband Josh, Jenna Whitcome, Justin Whitcome and wife Hannah, Jameson Foster and wife Alyssa, Elliott Foster, Maggie Stone, Kelly Stone, Mary Beth Bauermann, Catherine Bauermann and Charlotte Bauermann.
Chuck was blessed with great-grandchildren Brady and Madox Shaw, Xavier Rosen, Sophia and Reese Whitcome.
He was the loving brother of Celeste "Les" Schley and her late husband Wilson of Frederick, MD. He was the big brother-in-law to Drew Hofmann and his wife Kar of Santa Rosa California. He was Uncle Chuck to many adoring nieces & nephews.
In his grade school years, spent at St. Anthony's of Padua, Chuck served as an altar boy when he wasn't playing sandlot baseball. But, he was a Loyola man through & through. He graduated from Loyola HS and went on to earn a scholarship to Loyola College from the MD Association of CPAs. He was a member of the 1st class of ROTC and a Distinguished Military Graduate. He went on to teach as Adjunct Professor of Accounting at Loyola College.
Chuck served in the Army, mainly at Ft Myer, VA. While there he wrote "Army Command Management & Budget Manual".
Whenever Chuck reminisced on his work life, he always began with his days at Hochschild Kohn Department Store in Baltimore. The work ethic he carried with him throughout his life must have begun there.
His career as a CPA began with Ernst & Ernst. He eventually left them to begin his own firm, Bauermann & Druzgala. After many years with Clifton Gunderson, Chuck once again went out on his own, launching Bauermann Consulting Corp. and worked until he was 86.
His dedication to community & service began with his time as EVP of the Jaycees; Santa Clause Anonymous-Business Fund Raising Chairman and MD Hospital Association-Executive Committee. Chuck was instrumental in the foundation of the Dulaney Valley Symphony Society, with whom he served as President. He and Peg loved attending the symphony and being a part of those exciting years after Joseph Meyerhoff's leadership.
His primary joy in life was always his family. While some may say it was a delicious pastry, nothing brought him and Peg more joy than piling the kids in the station wagon for a Sunday drive or for camping adventures and then, in later years, gathering ALL of the family under one roof at the beach every Summer. He equally enjoyed being surrounded by family at Mass for holidays and he would often be found on the altar, where he served for decades as Lector.
Chuck & Peg made so many wonderful friends over their lifetimes and built their home on laughter, music, joy and faith. They were best remembered for their annual New Year's Day parties with friends, neighbors and his Loyola high school group, The Lamplighters.
Chuck was a family man but also a devout man of God, devoting himself, especially in his later years, trading in his golf clubs for a life of service. As the world changed around him, he remained a faithful servant, walking the walk of charity & love. Not only was he at Peg's side during her long illness, but he tended to countless others in their times of need.
Chuck has been an enthusiastic and active Knight of the Order of Malta Federal Association since 2017. The Order of Malta is a religious organization dedicated to caring for people in need, around the world - through medical, social and humanitarian works. He traveled to Lourdes 8 times to sponsor Malades, including his own daughter Cathy in 2019. He volunteered at The Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem, where he was beloved by the staff. He was actively involved in bringing Saint Bernadette's relics from Lourdes France to the people of Baltimore
He was also a Knight Commander with Star of the Equestrian Order. He is a Papal Honoree with the Cross Pro Ecclesiastical Et Pontifice (this is an honor from the Pope!)
Chuck started the Mt. Calvert bus stop breakfast program; served at the Franciscan Center Project; served meals to the homeless at My Sisters Place; distributed food to the poor in Baltimore, and provided outreach to the Little Sisters of the Poor.
Chuck was a patron and faithful member of the Good Samaritan Hospital community since the 1980s, having served on the Hospital, Foundation and O'Neill boards for several years; and as a Eucharistic Minister to patients at Good Sam and St Joseph's, up until his final days. He was also a member of many MedStar Health committees.
He was a faithful friend and tremendous supporter to St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and to all who were there, studying for the priesthood.
Up until 2023, Chuck served as President of the Serra Club of Baltimore, whose mission was to nurture religious vocations around the world.
Not only was Chuck honored to serve on the board of many financial and charitable organizations in his lifetime, but he called on many young people to do the same - to get involved.
RIP in peace and love of God, Dad, Pop, as you join the loved ones who have gone before you and keep your loving and doting eyes on those of us you left behind. We will strive to honor your life of service by following in the large footprints you created.
