Carol Frances (Cushner) Southall
January 8, 1944 - October 5, 2026
Carol Southall, 82, of Timonium, MD, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 5, 2026, at her son’s home in Timonium. She was surrounded by her son, Joseph, and daughter-in-law, Adelle, who were by her side.
Born in Baltimore, MD on January 8, 1944, Carol grew up in the Joseph Lee neighborhood. After attending elementary school at Sacred Heart of Jesus, she attended and graduated from the Institute of Notre Dame. She worked for many years at Social Security in Woodlawn in the foreign claims department. During those years, she traveled frequently, visiting Europe, several Caribbean islands, and cities across the U.S.
Carol married John Southall and the couple lived in Timonium before purchasing their home in Towson, MD, where they lived for several decades. Carol and John had a large circle of friends who were known for their elaborate, rotating dinner parties.
On September 15, 1984, they welcomed the birth of their son, Joseph John. Carol left professional life in order to devote herself to raising her son. She treasured her role as a mother and was deeply involved in Joe’s life as he grew. Her family was at the center of her world, and she took great pride in watching her son grow into the man he became.
She and John built a home in Oxford, MD, and they spent as much time there as possible. Carol treasured the small-town serenity of life by the bay. They loved leisurely walks around the town and catching up with their friends at the Latitude Bar.
After Joe’s graduation from college, Carol worked as an insurance agent before and later was employed as an ophthalmic technician in the office of Dr Robbin before retiring in 2019.
Carol was known for her kindness and willingness to help others. She had a positive and upbeat spirit, always ready with a smile and a laugh that was contagious. She loved cooking and food and took pleasure in making every meal something special. Carol especially enjoyed bringing people together around the table and making those around her feel welcome. She adored her grandson, Ryker, and delighted in the simple ways she could make him smile. Whenever he visited, she always had cookies or ice cream ready to share, and she loved bringing him home little trinkets from the gift shops she visited. These small gestures were so characteristic of Carol. She was always thinking of the people she loved and looking for ways to make them happy.
Carol is survived by her son, Joseph John; his wife, Adelle (King); her grandson, Ryker John; and her brother, Michael Joseph Cushner of Palm Springs, CA. She is also survived by her nephews, Mark Chapman, Michael Surratt, Jack (Peggy) Surratt, and Roger Surratt; and her nieces, Susan (Joseph) Shinsky, Patricia (William) Rogers, Ingrid Chapman, and Leslie Surratt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, A. John Southall; her parents, Michael and Margaret Cushner; her sisters, Catherine B. Chapman and Patricia D. Kuta; her brother-in-law, Michael Orlo Verhasselt; and her sister-in-law, Carole Jones (née Southall; formerly Surratt).
Funeral services will be held at Christ the King Church 1102 Hart Road Towson, Maryland 21286 on Wednesday, October 14th at 10:00 am followed by interment at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
