Carmelita Joan Calwell
Carmelita (Lita) J. Calwell (nee Miller) passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025 at age 95.
Lita was born March 22, 1930 at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore into a devout catholic family. Her father was John Stanley Miller an assistant treasurer and cashier for the McCormick spice company and Carmelita Haeffner Miller a homemaker. Carmelita like her mother was named for a great aunt's religious vocation as a carmelite nun who was cloistered down in the New Orleans French Quarter, her death occurred in 1929.
Lita grew up in Pimlico and later Mount Washington neighborhoods and was a 1948 graduate of Mount St. Agnes high school in Mount Washington. After high school she worked for the Brooks-Price Buick automobile dealership on the insurance side of the business. On Thanksgiving day 1954 Lita married Walter S Calwell, Jr. of Homeland a law student at the University of Baltimore law school.
Walter later became a well known property title examiner for nearly 60 years in Baltimore and Harford Counties before retiring at age 85. Lita lived in the same home in the Gaywood community for 58 years before retiring to Mercy Ridge Community in 2018, shortly after her husband's death. Lita enjoyed traveling with her sisters to destinations around the US and a few trips abroad.
Lita especially loved her vacation and weekends at the Calwell family beach house in Cape May, Nj. which was maintained by the family for more than 70 years. Like most Baltimoreans she loved the Orioles and Ravens and also was a huge Maryland Terps fan, especially for the men's basketball team. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sisters; M. Carolyn Morrison, Nancy L. Norris and Patricia Mallonee.
Lita was the devoted mother of W. Scott Calwell, III, D. Tad Calwell and his wife the late Joann, and J. Andrew Calwell and his wife June; also survived by many nieces and nephews.
