Carl David Gegorek (Corky) February 3, 1924 – August 7, 2024
It is with great sadness that the family of Carl David Gegorek (Corky) announce his passing on August 7, 2024 at the age of 100 years.
He is lovingly remembered by his three sons Wayne Gegorek; Richard Gegorek and his wife Cheryl; Craig Gegorek and his wife Susan; and his two daughters Susan (Gegorek) Shughrue and her husband Paul; and Lisa (Gegorek) Redmond and her husband David.
He will also be dearly missed by his grandchildren Stephanie (Borseth) Pita; Meaghan (Shughrue) Hefner and her husband Brendan; Carly (Gegorek) Terrier and her husband John; Melissa (Shughrue) Tama and her husband Justin; Jacob Shughrue and great grandson Declan Terrier.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Irene (Gawrys) Gegorek, his parents Ida (Kasper) and John Gegorek, his sister Constance (Gegorek) Stinebaugh and his brother John (Tucker) Gegorek.
Corky was a simple man, but one that was greatly respected and most of all, loved. As a child, he grew up in East Baltimore before enlisting in the U. S. Navy at age 17, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served through World War II as a Boatswain's Mate First Class. In May 1946, he
married the love of his life, Irene, and settled in East Baltimore before moving to Loch Raven Village and other parts of Towson, where they raised their five children.
Corky worked as an accounting clerk for Pennsylvania Railroad and then Amtrak for 43 years before retiring. He was an avid craftsman building his ideas from wood and other materials while teaching his skills to those that looked on. He was always busy assisting Irene and her Cake Creations home-based business, and taking time to relax by camping on the Chesapeake Bay. His favorite pastime was having fun with his grandchildren, watching the Orioles, Colts and Ravens and reading the Baltimore Sun newspaper. He also had a talent for completing 1000-piece puzzles. Later in life, he found a passion in cooking, especially making homemade soups. "Dad could never pass up a good bowl of Maryland crab soup or Maryland steamed crabs!"
