Obituary

Betty Marie Reed (nee Handley) of Towson, MD passed away peacefully on July 29, 2024. She was the beloved mother of Christine T. Mayhle (Kenneth), Rosemarie Reed (Jonathan Butts), and the late Robert J. Reed; cherished grandmother of Kathryn Hoffman (Matthew), Kristen Salisbury (Justin), and Ryan Butts; loving great-grandmother of Carter Hoffman and Graham Salisbury; dear sister of Cecilia Gessner and the late Vincent Handley, James Handley, and Reginald Handley. Betty is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Betty was the eldest of five children born to the late Reginald and Elizabeth (nee Owens) Handley. She attended St. Ann's School in Baltimore and graduated from Seton High School in 1947. After graduation, Betty worked as a telephone operator at C & P Telephone Company. She continued working there until her third child was born. In 1972, Betty began working at St. Joseph's Hospital at the switchboard and Information Desk, retiring after 30 years. During her time working at the hospital, she left a positive impact on everyone she met and formed lifelong friendships.

Betty was a newshound and liked to scoop people on current events. She loved the Baltimore Orioles, Coca-Cola, traveling, collecting Teddy bears, and, most importantly, her family. She especially loved doting on her grandkids. Betty was a friendly and caring person who always put others before herself. She was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed Irish music and dancing. Betty's love of life and adventure led her to travel throughout the US, Canada, Europe, the British Isles and the Caribbean. She was a member of the Red Hats Society and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sodality.

Betty will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
