Betty Elizabeth Mathai of Hampstead, MD, beloved wife of the late Louis Francis Mathai and devoted mother of six, died Friday, July 22, 2011 of heart failure. Betty was born January 8, 1928, to Anthony and Margaret May (Ramsburg) Esworthy in Baltimore. After graduating from Patterson High School, she worked as an administrative assistant in the Department of the Navy. She married Louis Mathai on November 22, 1947. Betty is survived her sister, Jenna Lea Schmidtman; six children and six grandchildren; Kimberly Mathai; Jeffrey Mathai and his wife, Judy Lynch; Hilary Rivenbark and her husband Daniel and their children Dan, Jr. and Kendall; Leslie Davis and her husband Glen and their children, Kienan, Galen, and Jordan; Randy Mathai; and Brad Mathai and his wife Susan and their son, David.

A Mass with Ashes will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, August 4, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 18310 Middletown Road, Parkton, Maryland.
