Barbara Hurlbrink Schwitzer
Retired Principal of Archbishop Spalding High School

On October 31, 2025, Barbara Hurlbrink Schwitzer passed away peacefully in Towson, Maryland.

Barbara served as the first lay principal of Archbishop Spalding High School from 1986 to 2000, leading it to become a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1992. Spalding recognized her invaluable contributions to the school by naming a scholarship for her upon her retirement. A lifelong educator, she taught English and History in Alabama and Pennsylvania and later served as Dean of Students at Maryvale Preparatory School.  She graduated from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia in 1958.

She loved dogs, baseball, and family.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years,  Allen Brock Schwitzer (USNA '58). She was the loving mother of Blair Taylor, Richard Brock Schwitzer (Mary), and Janet Schwitzer Nolan (Paul). Cherished grandmother of Lauren Taylor Wagandt (Charles), Nicholas Allen Taylor, Leah Taylor Carter (Kenneth), Kaylee Schwitzer Yarrow (Miguel), Kyle Tucker Schwitzer, Connor Michael Nolan, and Meredith Blair Nolan, and great-grandmother of Molly and Chase Wagandt.  She passed on to each and every one of them her love of dogs and family.

Her family would like to thank all of her dedicated caretakers at Bright View Towson and her loyal and dedicated friend, Elizabeth.
