Born to Italian immigrants in a West Virginia coal mining town, Anthony Mafale moved to Baltimore with his family in 1933. Initially, the family shared a home with relatives on Central Avenue on the outskirts of Little Italy. His father took on odd jobs including work as a stone mason and his mother was a seamstress. As a youth, Tony was active in the St. James the Lesser parish drum and bugle corps. In 1942, Tony enlisted in the United States navy and served four years in the Pacific theater invading islands during the Allied offensive. Returning to civilian life he entered the burgeoning field of television repair and trained as a technician eventually starting a career with Johnson Bros. of Baltimore in 1952. He married Bernadette Meninger in 1953 and the couple had three children. In 1956, he moved with his family to Loch Raven Village in Baltimore County and became a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish. Later in life Tony was active in Bykota of Towson. Tony was an avid fisherman who made his own lures, a craftsman who enjoyed carving ducks and birds, a fun-loving, spiritual individual who would regale you with a kind word, a silly one-liner, or old time melody from his harmonica which he always carried around in his hip pocket. He is survived by sons Anthony Mafale, his wife Donna, Gerry Mafale, his wife Laurie, Tim Mafale, his wife Mary Jo, and five grandchildren: Christina Mafale, Nicholas Mafale, Jordan Mafale, Scott Mafale, and Christopher Mafale; and his brother William Torre and his wife Carey.
