Obituary

Alice Jane Phillips (nee Garland), age 86 of Towson, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, July 14th, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Belair, Maryland. She was in the presence of his devoted daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren.

Alice was born in Hollsopple, Pennsylvania on January 24, 1940, and graduated from Conemaugh Township High School in Davidsville, Pennsylvania. She went onto move to Maryland, or as she called it, the "big city", and worked as a secretary for a bank and advertising agency in Baltimore. For twenty years, she also worked for Baltimore County Public Schools at Cedarmere Elementary in Reisterstown, Maryland as a secretary, until she retired in 2007.

Alice met Peter, the love of her life, at her Aunt Helen's house when she was still in high school. Peter proposed on the night of her graduation and the two were married in 1959. They finally settled in Towson, Maryland and for 61 years they have been inseparable. Alice was an active member of The First Lutheran Church of Towson where she taught Sunday school, vacation bible school, participated on the church council and took an active role in many church functions including bible study and church cookouts. Alice was a homemaker when her kids were little and was a school crossing guard and active member of the Hampton Elementary PTA. She enjoyed her many pets throughout the years, especially her Shih tzus Didi and Coco, being outside tending to her flower gardens, cooking and baking (especially after indulging in an evening of reading cookbooks, while enjoying a "nice cup of tea"), and attending her children's numerous sporting events. Alice was a voracious reader whose favorite author was Danielle Steele, and she loved collecting books, Longaberger baskets and polish pottery. At Cedarmere Elementary, Alice met a wonderful group of women who became her lifelong friends. Numerous friends shared her passion for reading and they met monthly for book club to enjoy a meal together and discuss their latest read.

After losing her beloved husband Peter in 2020, Alice moved to Pickersgill Retirement Community, on Chestnut Avenue in Towson, where she continued

to devour her books and enjoy outings with friends and family. Alice enjoyed people; especially her grandchildren who brought utter joy to her life and whom she absolutely adored.

Alice is preceded in death by her husband, Peter Paul Phillips (2020), her son, Peter Garland Phillips (1992), and her parents, Anna Kathryn Garland (nee Kaufman) and Wilford Lake Garland. She is also preceded in death by numerous brother and sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews and numerous beloved pets.

Alice is survived by her adoring daughter Jennifer Pipkin (nee Phillips) of Havre de Grace, Maryland and her husband Kenneth Pipkin, her three loving grandchildren, William Paul, Emily Alice and Megan Marie, her grand-puppy Reagan, her Uncle Verle Garland, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A viewing for Alice will be held at Ruck Funeral Home in Towson on Tuesday, August 4th from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 pm. A memorial service in Alice's honor will be held at the Ruck Chapel at 10 am on Wednesday, August 5th. The burial Service for Alice will take place at 11am on Thursday, August 6th, at the Thomas Mennonite Cemetery in Hollsopple, Pennsylvania.

Her love, kindness and smile will be missed forever. She truly was one-of-a kind.
