Obituary

Alice Dalbey Bernstein
June 9, 1933-September 6, 2025

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Roy Leland Dalbey and Marie Shuler Dalbey, and was predeceased by her younger brother John T. Dalbey. She graduated from Roosevelt HS in Des Moines and attended the University of Iowa for her BA, then Johns Hopkins University for her MS degree.

Her career in public education began with a position at Kurtz Junior High in Des Moines. Once moving to Baltimore, she taught at Pimlico, Pikesville, and Towsontown Jr. High's, and concluded after 35 years with her retirement from Dulaney High School in Baltimore County. During her career, she was an English teacher, a Reading Specialist, and a co-advisor of the National Honor Society.  After retiring, she privately tutored students in reading, study skills, and preparation for college admission for an additional 20 years.

She married the late Neil R. Bernstein in 1966 and moved to Baltimore from Des Moines, where they resided in Mt. Washington, Homeland, and a condo in Guilford.

As a college undergrad at the University of Iowa, she was the president of her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma (KKG). Later, she served two separate terms as president for the Baltimore alumni group of KKG and was especially pleased to participate in the establishment of a chapter at John Hopkins University.  She held membership in the Junior League of Des Moines and in Baltimore where she served as treasurer when the organization opened The Wise Penny thrift shop and was one of the first sponsors of local professional tennis tournaments.

During her lifetime, she served as secretary on the board of the Baltimore Ballet Company, was a member of the Hamilton Street Club, the Johns Hopkins Club, and actively participated in the Renaissance Institute at the College of Notre Dame. She was a voracious reader and also enjoyed classical music, and ballet. Her life long love of ballet included weekly ballet sessions into her 90's, a ballet-focused trip to St. Petersburg, Russia, as well as attending ballet performances at the D.C. Kennedy Center.

Favorite memories of Alice's were her sailing at Camp Holiday in Minnesota during summers as a young girl, and vacationing at Lake Okoboji in Iowa as a child, and again with her own children and grandchildren.

Alice is survived by her two daughters: Mary Alice Marron (Kevin F.) of Baltimore and Cathy Nolan of Bozeman, Montana. Five grandchildren: Megan Shefte (Bob Olson), Kyle Shefte, Kevin T. Marron, Patrick Marron, and Alison Marron as well as two great-granddaughters: Audrey Shefte-Olson and Hallie Shefte-Olson. Also survived by sister-in-law Lynn Lobe (Jim Lemmert) of Reisterstown as well as niece Sara Dalbey-DeBrecht (Mitch) and John T. Dalbey Jr. (Justine) of Des Moines, Iowa.

A private family service will be held.
